FROM THE ANALYST
VICTOR ORBAN, CANNY AS EVER, SEES THE WAY THE WAR IS GOING
ORBAN, who once demonstrated against the Russian occupation of Hungary as a student, but is now eerily smitten with Putin’s autocracy.
Yet even he can see the eventual outcome of the war will not be what Putin envisaged.
In a radio interview yesterday, Orban recognised that, ‘if the Russians were going to defeat Ukraine they would have done so by now, but were not seeing it. We probably never will’.
He sounded disappointed.
There’s been talk that if Ukraine was defeated Russia would be willing to hand back an area of Ukraine on the border with Hungary and Romania known as Carpathian-Ruthenia, an area of Hungarian ethnic majorities inside Ukraine. One of Orban’s less than subtle issues is that of greater Hungary - where Hungarian speakers live inside Romania, southern Slovakia, northern Croatia and a huge part of Transylvania in Romania.
These areas were once controlled by the pre-1918 Kingdom of Hungary as part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
Today Orban and his Fidesz Party regularly use EU freedom of travel rules to enter Romania especially and stir up ethnic tensions with speeches and cultural exchanges designed to reinforce ethnic tensions. It’s all very reminiscent of Germany demanding the Czech owned Sudetenland in 1938.
Orban’s stooges were especially active when Ukraine was first attacked, but with time having passed and the Russian attacks patently failing to create any kind of victory scenario, these operations have calmed down. Perhaps at last, Orban will learn to stick to his own territory. With Putin unable to deliver the situation for Orban requires a little more tact. He may have to face after all, that he is loosing a ‘friend’ and has to live with his neighbours. Of course if Trump regains the presidency he’ll have another fanboy to deal with.
Yet ultimately if Orban cannot deliver on his ethnic purity dreams and his nationalist rhetoric gets nowhere, his own days may well be numbered.
Opposition in Hungary faces a deliberate series of obstacles to hinder their every move. But it won’t be enough if the government fails to deliver on what always were bloated and poorly idealised pie in the sky ideals based on historic principles long seen as those of another age.

A Message from the Freedom of Russia Legion
In the battles near Volchansk, several of our brothers-in-arms were wounded. They were saved by the takmed, which had been jagged to the level of reflexes: they provided first aid to themselves on the battlefield. As soon as the opportunity arose, doctors evacuated them from the battlefield to the headquarters. Huge gratitude to them for this.
Someday we will tell the stories of the guys, but for now we want to recover, recuperate well and return to duty.
Our wounded soldiers are already receiving medical care, and the rest of the legionnaires continue to carry out their tasks near Volchansk and Chasovoy Yar. Both first and second are an honour.

Ihor Klymenko gave an update on Kharkiv:
It took more than 16 hours to put out the fire in the Kharkiv construction hypermarket caused by targeted russian strikes. The fire spread to more than 13 thousand square meters.
Thanks to continuous heroic work of rescuers, the fire was completely extinguished.
Russian shelling killed 14 people and injured 43 more. 16 people are considered missing.
The headquarters of the police investigative department and the forensic laboratory are working at the scene of the tragedy. Biological samples were taken from 10 citizens who have already contacted the police. The identities of the three dead have been established. The identification of the bodies is ongoing.
Anyone who has lost contact with loved ones can contact the employees of the headquarters of the investigative department or call 102. I urge relatives of the first line to submit DNA samples to speed up the identification process.

Who Feeds our Fighters?
A Report from the Legion's Kitchen
Balanced nutrition, an effective combination of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and flavour make the kitchen of the "Freedom of Russia" Legion a true place of strength for each unit fighter.
"Food should be not only healthy but also tasty, and for that, it needs to be cooked with soul," explains LSR's head chef, a fighter with the call sign "Phantom." Due to a severe concussion sustained in battles in the Donetsk region, he traded his infantry camouflage for a chef's apron.
"Just because our country is led by a mad old man doesn't mean we can't be on our own land. I want all our volunteer units to unite into one fist and knock this Putin vermin off the throne," says Phantom, sharpening his knives.

💔 Kharkiv, relatives say goodbye to Anzhelika Taran, who was killed by a Russian missile on May 19.
The girl and her friends were at a recreation center in the village of Cherkaska Lozova when the enemy struck. When rescuers and medics arrived, the occupiers struck a second time.
7 people died, including 25-year-old Angelica. She was 7 months pregnant.
"We met her family at the cemetery the day after the burial. They wanted to talk to us, they gave permission to shoot and publish these photos: they want their grief to be known. They want the world to see that every figure in this war is a real person, not a statistic," wrote photographers Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov, who published the photos.
