It's worth remember that most UK PhD students get a low stipend not a wage. Neither do PhD Students get employment rights, such as maternity leave, pensions, nor even have realistic prospects of an academic career.
Given that all that, PhD supervisors, if you don't support students to do things in that are in their interests, as opposed to benefiting your own career, you are engaging appalling levels of exploitation, and basically a horrible person.
