TL;DR: 5 benefits from daily journaling as a PhD student
1. Reduces Stress
2. Helps to track progress
3. Improves writing skills
4. Improves memory
5. Helps achieve goals
5. Helps achieve goals
Journaling won't achieve the goal for you but it can help clarify details and necessary steps to take.
I've been using it to help me focus on arranging everything for my PhD defense like writing, dates, contacting supervisors etc.
4. Improves memory
You probably have many great ideas that you've forgotten about because you didn't write them down.
I have access to all the best ideas I've come up with including this thread idea that you're reading now that I came up with 2 weeks ago.
3. Improves writing skills
Through journaling, I've become better at expressing and connecting my thoughts on the page.
This clarity of thought and communication has come in handy now with writing my thesis introduction where my supervisors had very few comments.
2. Helps to track progress
You're probably juggling a lot at once like a PhD, being a good partner, and taking care of your health to name a few.
I found by journaling I keep better track of how I'm doing with each area of my life and see where I can improve.
1. Reduces Stress
If you're like me you might ruminate about something stressful and end up making it worse than it actually is.
Journaling helps to get the stressful thoughts out of my head and on the page where I don't worry about them as much as I otherwise would.
Journaling has numerous benefits both for mental health and clarity.
Here are 5 benefits I've noticed from daily journaling as a PhD student.
