I think Twitter is having a hugely negative effect on discussion. Obviously, there are more typical reasons such as algorithms incentivising more extreme positions. But there's another fact I really hate.
One of the core philosophies of Twitter's design is posting arbitrarily short statements. You can create a thread but they are far less appealing to the average Twitter user. This arbitrarily small-sized message normalises the age-old problem of politicians having to make their ideas short and snappy.
In every field I'm slightly knowledgable about no subject of debate is ever that simple, there usually several layers of nuance. Because I believe reality is nuanced.
Twitter is literally incapable of this nuance and so in my opinion I believe twitter posts are (for the most part) fundamentally incapable of expressing ideas that reflect reality to a sufficient degree.
Short messages short-changing society... (cutting out what's needed / long form understanding / practising people etc)...

The problem of people talking in short form CUTS out emotions, not forcing themselves in understanding the world is part of their aversion - call it lack of responsibility.
It doesn't helps there isn't other ways in place otherwise it would have a compound effect.
Masses of people I believe could still be individually respected even if that is taking a extreme (it's possible if will and want was there).
"Why should I care" <--- they don't see what goes around comes around and that is important if they care for them self / the future!
Ironically we sold out (both designer in short text boxes or promoting more frequency (while having benefits of limitation) and also just being $ucked into all that $tuff monetarily born and ordered.
Talking a lot usually involves many more dimensions (which is why you can see the army yes / no is suited for and similar in society today). "I don't want the details just the yes or no" without realising ironically it doesn't work like that (unless you are in the army or capitalism!) and responsibility on the knowing is not via buying choices or leaving things (understanding / trust) al to others. People lost or need to improve the sapience in ALL decision making not just 'job' and making a family of the same diminishing returns in terms of genes!
It's not enough to do the short form and we ourself are "short"-changing the world by doing so.

lol (one laughes since I'm typing all this! And yes some typing is ok and main problem is ALL is just output and somewhat just output / not used as time passes and things get devalued / demolished / defective by design).
Life needs to incorporate more or forever get stuck in text land (something people don't often even realise, it's all text or short memes and good but limited!)
Getting off Twitter and re-creating communication is probably near to 1 measurable answer after not expecting BigTech to design and speak for us!! We need to do that our self!
