I have recently been asked lots of questions about the great teacher shortage, and I am increasingly troubled by the narrative. For example, in California, where I am, there are over 2000 teacher openings state wide!
Ok, there are also 320,000 teachers, so .6% vacancies, and these vacancies are concerned in STEM and SPED and in "high turnover" districts and schools.
This is not to minimize that fewer teachers are entering the profession, or that many are leaving.
But it's complicated, there is declining enrollment in many places, privatization, and an abundance of teachers in some subjects and areas.
