@Popehat Holy shit. Real "burn the witch" energy there.
#blackmastodon, what's the dopest rendition of Lift Every Voice And Sing?
Related #lifeprotip: if I get a physical blank form from someone, I try to remember to photocopy it before writing on it. Lifesaver if I screw it up.
#lifeprotip I don't always remember to do this, but I try to photocopy and file every piece of paperwork I have to submit to someone. It can be so useful to know what I sent after I've forgotten.
@h_thoreson @nocoursewalks Yeah, liquidity is relative. But it seems suboptimal to have people not selling when they would otherwise want to if they're golden handcuffed to a sweet mortgage.
It's certainly also debatable whether 30yr fixed mortgages are good policy, to begin with. There are a lot of externalities.
Also, in the bigger picture, it seems like a land value tax would help with more efficient land use.
@h_thoreson @nocoursewalks the fact that we have 30-year fixed-rate mortgages is pretty remarkable. But the fact that you can't sell your position as the debtor nor shift the mortgage to a different property affects liquidity of housing.
@h_thoreson @nocoursewalks It's fascinating to think about how all the period of all-time low mortgage rates affects the broader economy.
- risk averseness in the labor market (as you identified)
- reluctance to sell
@carnage4life Seems accurate 😂
*Creating* generational wealth is not hard for Black people. It's happened many times in US history. There have been thriving communities.
*Keeping* generational wealth has proved to be nearly impossible. Between racist pogroms, and eminent domain used to create parks, freeways, reservoirs, and shopping malls, Black folk in the US have consistently had their wealth stolen by white folks.
I still run into New Yorkers that go to Central Park every week, but have never heard of Seneca Village.
My previous employer ha no clue on how to deal with a neurodivergent person. The first step he took was asking me what mean being neurodivergent and what he could do. He then took courses on neurodiversity and how to support neurodivergent workers. He helped me implementing a better way to plan my day. Broke down my tasks into smaller tasks, implemented the "traffic light system", and had weekly meeting with me. He also sent me every hour or so to have a short walk around. My productivity went up and felt accepted in the team. My way of thinking was respected and appreciated. Employers can seriously benefit from employing neurodivergent workers by asking the individual, build a better knowledge, and implement small changes to support workers.
@gotofritz@fosstodon.org I'm not a political historian, but I'm pretty sure Marxism has been influential well beyond the self-identified Marxist and communist regimes. Take social democrat and labor parties, not to mention the labor movement within industry. And then you can also think about how China is under one-party communist rule but nonetheless has a whole lot of capitalism in practice.
@carnage4life All new pieces of generic infrastructure unleash a wave of "feature, not a business" startups. Many will be a flash in the pan. Some will get rug pulled by the platform. Some will make good money for a little while. Some will get acquired. A few will become proper standalone businesses.
@carnage4life I agree with the picture for sure. But that's how it always goes. I remember all the app startups after the iPhone, all the social media app startups, all the API hackathon project startups, etc etc.
@gotofritz@fosstodon.org I think there's a huge distinction between Marx's theoretical communism and 20th century regimes that considered themselves communist. But it's ambiguous what "communism" or "Marxism" is referring to without agreeing on semantics for the sake of discussion. A lot of people would rather torpedo discussion by bogging it down in semantic ambiguity.
@gotofritz@fosstodon.org @HilliTech interesting point. It occurs to me that I have never tried that, but it's probably a very basic and common use case.
A Fediverse people index would be really useful. But I think we need better solutions for verification. I suspect it's very doable, but unfortunately I don't know if it's considered a priority.
@gotofritz@fosstodon.org @HilliTech I think the initial Twitter experience is not much better. The only difference is most people don't want to use either, and the people on Twitter have already invested the effort, so it's a sunk cost.
@simon there's always fraud and deception! Incidentally, one of the primary use cases for crypto, too.
@darryl I haven't had the honor of trying Teams. But what if it were Slack but with better support for interactive applications?
I am now @acjay
