Today I will blow your mind. 🙂

Most entomologists refer to bees as vegetarian wasps, as bees evolved from carnivorous wasps about 120 million years ago.

But did you know that there exist species of Vegetarian Wasps called Pollen Wasps - Pic 1 (Wikipedia), and Carnivorous Bees called Carrion Bees - Pic 2 (Ricardo Ayala)?

The wasps don't have pollen carrying hairs so they eat the pollen and regurgitate it at the nest.

The bees have special gut bacteria to digest meat.

We are excited about the below pull request from @TandonSuyash & team at @AMD, with a #HIP implementation for #RELION, which allows running it on @AMD #GPUs! If this works well, it will become part of #RELION-4.1. 😍

After scoping out Mastodon for about a week now, it's probably time for an #introduction

Hi I'm Alex, a Reviews #Editor for @Dev_journal, a community #journal covering #devbio, #stemcells & #regeneration. Development hosts the #devbiol community blog @the_node and is published by the @Co_Biologists.

I'll mostly be tooting about amazing #devbio research and conferences, and occasionally about personal stuff like #books, #reading, #gardening and other adventures on my bike or #kayak.

If you are submitting an abstract to
@CosyneMeeting
this year, especially if its your first time, we at the COSYNE DEIA committee have made this video to help you out: youtu.be/0r4Nz7NGmUw

Its interviews from experienced reviewers talking about how they evaluate abstracts

The distribution map of the hoverfly Eristalis pertinax may be telling a story about failed clean water regulations:

“Eristalis pertinax is a European hoverfly. Like Eristalis tenax, the larva of E. pertinax is a rat-tailed maggot and lives in drainage ditches, pools around manure piles, sewage, and similar places containing water badly polluted with organic matter.” inaturalist.org/taxa/52490?loc

Caveats: sampling bias, and unknown distribution prior to modern waterways pollution.

#introduction. I am a plant developmental geneticist. The lab addresses a fundamental biological question: how does morphogenesis translate genotype into form? To this end we study signaling at the plasma membrane - cell wall interface and we investigate how mechanical forces influence tissue shape using 3D digital ovules.

A cool on-demand trafficking mechanism in #OSNs.

OSNs have these MVB-like structures containing ciliary #olfactory signal transduction proteins including ORs. These organelles hang out in the OSN's equivalent of a cell phone lot in the OSN dendrite. In response to stimulation, the intraluminal vesicles are released, presumably resulting in increased delivery of transduction proteins to the #cilia.

These neurons just continue to be full of surprises.

#introduction:
I'm here following my #ScienceTwitter crew on this #TwitterMigration. Hoping we can all reconnect. I run a group at MIT diving deep into the immunological underpinnings of some of the most misunderstood and neglected chronic diseases in modern medicine. I specialize in chronic #Lyme and I'm also trying to understand why that looks so much like long COVID. I'm obsessed with mucosal immunology, sex differences in immune responses to infectious disease, and the health of this planet.

Last week the global population hit 8 billion people. Yes, that’s a lot BUT there are about 1.4 billion insects for every human on Earth. Combined, they weigh about 70x more than all of us.

And insects have been around for over 350 million years. That's longer than the dinosaurs. Modern humans only showed up between 200-300,000 years ago.

We need insects to survive. They don't need us. This is their world.

Wielding a massive goth shield crafted from its own feces, this young tortoise beetle is truly an animal for our times.

Time for my #neuroscience #introduction here. I am studying the nervous systems of jellyfish using computational modelling, trying to understand their dynamics and their evolution. I use biophysical neuron models and feed the resulting dynamics of their network into fluid dynamics simulations to study how their neuronal dynamics control the swimming and turning of these strange creatures.

#introduction:
I am a Lecturer and #NewPI at the #UniversityOfManchester #UoM
I am interested in how cellular interactions with the tumour microenvironment control fundamental aspects of cancer cell behaviour, including regulation of gene expression.
In @thebyronlab, we combine #proteomics, #sequencing, #bioinformatics, functional #CellBiology, super-resolution #imaging and #cancer models, to discover new properties of cancer #CellAdhesion #networks.

At a meta level, something I find mildly interesting is how many people are writing stuff on Mastodon about how it's impossible for Mastodon to scale up without using an ad supported model (b/c server costs), it's better to have ranked feeds because most people want them, etc.

The thing I think is interesting is that the people writing this stuff, implicitly, seemingly cannot conceive of a model where the organization is not growth and profit maximizing.

What math do neuroscientists need to know?

A highlight of #SFN2022 was Ella Batty's answer to this question. She showed off an incredible math for neuroscientists course she has developed at Harvard with open materials (ebatty.github.io/MathToolsforN) and discussed her amazing work with Neuromatch Academy (compneuro.neuromatch.io/)

Her SFN slides are here: osf.io/s94b2

I posted an #introduction a few days ago, but here's one for my study system, aka the coolest salamanders in Michigan, and maybe the world: the unisexual Ambystoma!

These salamanders are all female, polyploid (>2 sets of chromosomes) and "steal" DNA from males of other species. They've been around for 5 million years and are the oldest known unisexual vertebrate.
