@yisraeldov @freemo @louis@emacs.ch Rather than being premature optimization, this is late in coming. You might not be aware of this, but in the absence of a central authority, self-moderating instances have joined together to build domain blocklists that are shared widely and based on nothing more than the say-so of one or two people.

While mastodon does have plenty of tools we can use to block content that we don't want to see, many instance admins choose to really aggressively block entire instances without any due process or evidence or opportunity for counter-evidence. I've seen QOTO described as having "no moderation at all," something I know to be factually false. I've seen entire instances blocked because of the actions of one non-admin user, which is the right of any server admin, but doesn't bode well for federation. I've seen entire instances blocked *not* because of something anyone said or did, but because the instances were insufficiently aggressive in promising to seek out and block other bad instances. It's mind-boggling, and scary for anyone thinking about running an instance of their own.

Primarily at this point, the UFoI is about a guarantee of due process, which is currently lacking in the fediverse. It might not cause the super-aggressive blockers to change their approach, but it will at least guarantee that smaller instances won't be completely isolated from everyone on the whim of someone at a big server having a grumpy day.

If mastodon were as safe and friendly as you say it is, the UFoI wouldn't exist, and the hashtag for BlackMastodon wouldn't be filled with people saying that they're seeing worse treatment on Mastodon than the bird site. I'm glad your personal experience has been positive, but that is not the case for everyone.

@TTimo What spirit is he referring to? I can't come up with anything.

Hello people of the Fediverse! Some of you may have heard that a new Mastodon client, Ivory,  is in development for iOS (and Mac!). This is true! Tapbots is going all in on Mastodon and we hope this place continues to grow and thrive. Tweetbot will continue to be developed alongside Ivory as a lot of code is shared. A new Mac version of Tweetbot and Ivory are also currently in development and we are working hard on getting those towards a public beta state.

@chrispeters @ivory I don't see anything about this app promoting (directly or indirectly) killing elephants for their tusks. Where are you seeing that?

@ibagail Malbolge. If you can program it in Malbolge you can program it in anything.

Wow, after 25 years of Unix experience, I learned that you can filter output in #less.

Press ampersand (&) and enter a regex to show only lines matching the regex.

Press ampersand (&) and then exclamation mark (!) to apply an inverse filter.

@BobKerns Mine too. I knew about slow mode but had never tried it. Now I'm using it, and it's a much better experience even on the slower feeds.

@dpiponi Come on over to qoto.org. You can post latexmath, except you have to wait for @freemo to fix it, lol, if you actually want it to display right. And almost everything else goes. And most of the alt-libs and alt-cons block qoto, so you don't have to worry about pissing any of them off, well unequally anyway.

@preceptsofzote@emacs.ch I haven't yet had to declare bankruptcy, but I use-package, periodically prune stuff, and try to keep things understandable. Seven years, hovers around 2K lines. 🤞

@BobKerns Slow mode preference will stop the scrolling. Federated is too much info for me even so. I only take a look once in a while.

Is metatext the best iphone mastodon client? I only ask this because it's the slowest, jankiest, most fragile iphone app I've ever had the misfortune to install on my phone. Surely there's something better?

@engelbart Yeah I was going from memory mostly, I can see now (e.g 2 year minimum bet) that it's not what you were looking for. 😆

@fasterthanlime @eddyb

I don't know what this about, but someone needs to learn about rebase, imho.

@Elucidating
Welp, it's the turbofish, which is a weird thing that was brought into being by the avoidance of the weird tax, which is to by following the same stupid <> syntax for templates that C++ uses, wheareas they should have used [], or even «» or even removing > > as an operator (what's so wrong about rsh(x)), and lsh(x) instead, how often do we need to do a fucking bitshift anyway?) and so here we are answering questions that should have never have been needed to be posed.

@astronomerritt

It's an awful social problem, but also an interesting technical one. How do you allow for federation via hash tags without allowing any random racist to spin up a server every day in order to harass all the blm and woke tags they can find in their timeline before they are blocked?

I am new to the fediverse, but it seems to me that the defaults are wrong, new instances (and perhaps accounts) should have limited privilege until they prove themselves to be good citizens. Currently they are allowed all the privilege until they prove themselves to be bad, which is a perpetual game of whack-o-mole.

This would require a bit more communal effort of course, and it's not at all clear how that would be done. But if possible, it would be much better than the current situation, as long as there is some kind of gradual process when instances go rotten. This is the other side of the coin, instances can be de-federated from small infractions, whereas a gradual and considered approach would be preferable.

No clue if that is even technically feasible with the current protocols, but I felt like musing on this topic.

I do really like it here, but it's super clear that Black folk and POC are absolutely not having the same nice peaceful experience as I am, and until that changes I'm not gonna be all-in on this place.

I learned exponentially more from listening to the experiences of these folk on the birdsite than I did from any "equality and diversity initiative", and if they're not coming here then that's a huge problem.
