If anyone here follows the podcast, you may remember the episode "Sam & Harlan"--about a young mother diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Sam passed away yesterday, just days after their 35th birthday. But they reached their goal of wanting to live long enough for their little boy to be able to have memories of them when they were alive.
My heart is heavy. And all I have to offer is Sam's story, that they were generous enough to record so that it could be shared with the world. It was a privilege to work on this. I hope the family--esp their husband and young Harlan--will find comfort and peace in time.

i get a lot of queer folks are still religious, & i suppose i kind of understand that in an abstract way, but i am bemused by the amount of effort some folks expend to "prove" that the Bible or whatever isn't REALLY against being gay
yes. it is. of course it is. it is a deeply patriarchal, misogynistic document written by deeply patriarchal, misogynistic ppl who were barely knew how to make iron. it has plenty of other abhorrent moral takes (viz. slavery). is the Bible's homophobia so shocking?
A "Keystone Species" is a species that holds together an eco-system, without which the whole system may crumble. Naturalists may divide their effort to help save this other endangered species or that unique symbiotic relationship, but a more reliable and less labor intensive solution would be to focus their efforts on the Keystone Species.
Fox "News" is the Keystone Species of the eco-system of hate. They want us to run around dividing our efforts on all the different things they attack, when it is much more effective and less labor intensive to focus on the Keystone Species. If we focus our efforts on getting rid of Fox, the entire eco-system of hate will collapse.

Premise 2. Science is the best way we have for finding out the truth
Conclusion. Anti-science is anti-American
An average person thinks, "I'm smart. They can't fool me."

Remember: the cultural heritage of America isn't only white supremacy, sexism, racism, bigotry, and capitalist greed. Our heritage is ALSO abolitionists, labor unions, civil rights, women's suffrage, environmental activism, etc.
Don't look at history just to find the mistakes. You can also look at history to find the victories and inspiration. We stand on the shoulders of generations of people working together towards a more perfect union. Sure, there's a whole lot of shit that's fucked up, but there's a whole lot of people who are also going out there every day to try and fix stuff too.
