@roydanroy I'm reading Jürgen Richter-Gebert's, _Perspectives on Projective Geometry: A Guided Tour Through Real and Complex Geometry_,
Projective Geometry is used a lot in computer vision, but I'm aware now it is used in an ad hoc manner -- when it is convenient, we switch to homogenous coordinates from projective geometry, and when not convenient, we stick with Euclidean geometry. This book is so neat, more mathy than I am used to, introduces lots of things new to me in an easy-ish to understand way. I have a thread from the bird site!

I would like to be reading some literary fiction too, currently I don't have anything going. My last few reads concerned dystopian futures, and I need something different.

#Introduction
Hi, I'm Lucas, a Belgian researcher at Google Brain in the beautiful Zürich. On twitter, I'm known as @giffmana.

I don't think Elon taking over Twitter is the end of the world, but I do like @sirbayes "JMLR moment" take of what's happening and wish to support it.

I post a mix of paper summary threads, hot takes, and shitposts; my main goals are to be entertaining and informative, in that order.

Cheers! 🍻

A quick note of something that may be important for people to know: I already noted that DMs here are a bit sketchy security wise, but (THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT): if you mention someone else's account in a DM, Mastodon, yoinks them into the conversation.

So, you know, if you think you're talking about someone behind their back, you might be doing it to their face.

@BioLucy I wrote a post about it last year - -these resources are computer-science oriented, but some of the general precepts I think cross over.

Something that really seems to help is to get another person to read it. When I was helping review SOPs (not now), some of them were ready to go, and some needed many revisions and more thought.

I couldn't figure out why my website wasn't verified ... I had added the html. Turns out I didn't push the changes 🤦

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Hello world, again! Since introductions are a thing...

I'm Oliver - I do computer vision and robotics for agriculture, 3D reconstruction and recognition of plant structure.

Also generally computer graphics in general, functional programming.

Also rock climbing, biking and running depending on what I'm into at any point in time.

#Introduction

Hi! I am a CS PhD student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I am broadly interested in learning based #robotics to solve problems in #agriculture.

Currently I am working on vision-based navigation of under-canopy agricultural robots (ansivakumar.github.io/learned-). These small robots could enable various precision agriculture applications like autonomous cover crop planting, mechanical weeding etc in an affordable way.

Reasonable folks ask, “Why don’t we have robots to do X?” where X is something like clean the dishes off the table, or dust the cluttered living room shelves, or clean the fridge. The gap between the brass tacks answers to these questions and what most robotics research focuses on is astronomical. It often feels like the immediate blockers are all someone else’s problem to solve.

@KevinKaichuang once we passed the 2-week mark, I thought, "this thing is going to take 5 years to control."

Answering the question, I had no idea really when they would go back. I love my current doc b/c she's very clear about what my risk is and what the preferred path for my family is if I ask. Chronic disease means planning is hard / disappointing, so I try not to plan.

I've heard RSV is terrible, our kids never got it. You got lucky!

@KevinKaichuang
From anecdotal stories here, yes. Flu A is particularly bad here at the moment for kids, a lot of strep too.

We've had our kids home since 2020 b/c of my health issues, and it has been ... difficult. Not being able to tell them when they are going back has been even more difficult, particularly for our older kid.

@vivtek Oh, thanks! If you try it and have any issues, please let me know.

@ccanonne How was the migration? Any issues to consider?

Hello everyone! I am a #PhD student in #CS at #UCL. I am interested in #AI and #ML. I am also interested in #mathematics and #statistics!

More specifically, I am into #graph neural networks and PAC-Bayes. I am also curious about geometric deep learning, probabilistic modelling, #Bayesian inference and interpretable models.

I'm really looking forward to meeting new people here!

Who am I, and why am I here? #introduction

I am a machine learning researcher, using tools from #Bayes, #stats, #optimization, #informationgeometry, #deeplearning, signal processing, etc.

I care deeply about people, their well-being, inclusion, diversity, equity, privacy, and justice.

I believe in slow and rigorous scientific process, to add value to existing knowledge, and improve positive impact on society.

I am here to learn about all of these.

Thank you for this info ... I've been a confused about this cultural difference. I found an explainer and changed my defaults too.

"There are also some conventions around these privacy settings that many instance administrators ask users to uphold. For example when writing a thread, the first post can be public, but subsequent ones should be set to unlisted as to avoid flooding the federated and local timeslines with several toots sent in rapid succession on the same subject. These timeslines are for discovery of new users, and to easily start conversations and should be kept mostly clean from conversational traffic. Consequently, replies to public toots should also be sent as unlisted or followers-only (if more private)."

Bird habit creation for the winter continues ... the kids called it the 'wood monolith' after the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season we're watching. (The hope is that woodpeckers will like it. We'll ... see.)

btw bearded iris blooming in November?? so strange.
