If you're a creative looking for a smaller Mastodon instance to join, then this one just popped up:

Remember: it doesn't matter where you base yourself, you can follow other people on other instances still. What your home influences is your 'local' feed.

Not sure if by default but you can click the globe icon and make it unlisted when you post it.
I wrote a simple guide to the very basics of Mastodon — feel free to send to any newbies who are thinking of coming on board: https://clivethompson.medium.com/come-join-me-on-mastodon-folks-bbb073ff05d2
You find the switch to Mastodon quite hard / you don’t like the app / you find the app slow, counterintuitive, and unaesthetic?
LIFE CHANGER: You don’t have to use Mastodon on the Mastodon app! 🤯
I switched to Metatext (available for iPhone, not sure for Android) and this makes the whole experience *so* much more enjoyable 😍 It takes to 2 seconds to download and reconnect to your account via your instance/server!

Great to see your #introduction. Here at the University of Canterbury, we are starting out with a lab studying human emotions using portable #eeg and #microstates analysis. What resources on #microstates would you recommend?
Testing out re'tooting' good parts ...
Retooting?
So basically, hit 'Reply', and then take the name of the original poster and write your own commentary.
Anyone who reads your commentary and click on the post will see the original post that evoked the comment.
For example, the post that I have re'tooted' here is a great reflection on the comparison between #birdsite and #mastodon. Worth discussing and expanding.
On some instances, such as https://qoto.org
they have a quote button; you can use this quote button to directly insert the post to quote toot, so to say.
If you hit reply and write a status in the reply, it will by default also include the original post that evoked the response to keep in context. This is the basis of reply used as quote toot.
Now, if you do not want the original poster to be included in the status that you want to share to your **followers**, remove the original poster's handle from the reply.
If you specifically want your friend to view that post, add his handle to the post.

Thanks @mguhlin for setting up the group. #Edutooters is a great initiative to bring together interesting posts and updates. Suppose this can be across the #fediverse using the same hashtag and group id.

Excellent article. A couple of notes if it helps:
> Posts on mastodon are called “toots” and have a 500 character limit
This actually depends on the instances. For example, https://qoto.org allows 65k characters and markdown formatting, so there is some flexibility there
* While you cannot do equivalent of 'retweet', if you respond to a toot, that serves the purpose of both reply and quote 'toot' if it were
A number of people have asked what I could have done better. In particular, I should have set the first post in the thread to public and the rest of the posts as unlisted.
Here's a fantastic explainer from @djnavarro via @flodebarre:

Qoto.org specific post for journal clubs
##How to set up a journal club in qoto.org
* If you set up a home in qoto.oorg, you will see on the right hand bar an item named 'Circles'.
* You can add your 'follower' handles in the *circle*
* This becomes your private **group** within Mastodon client where you can share links, images, status updates.
Anything you post to the circle will stay within the circle. Suppose you want to set up a journal club and circulate the full text of the paper there. Then set up the themed and focused discussion within that circle.
Want to give it a try?

## Why Mastodon or indeed any client on #fediverse wins
* Imagine being able to follow your friend's Facebook account from your twitter client and read all posts. You cannot do on twitter but you can do something similar on Mastodon.
* So get accounts on other servers such as #pixelfed instances which is federated Instagram, and you can see and share here, that is, you will not _need_ to visit that site to view the posts
* Get an account on a #peertube instance, and you can use it as YouTube
*#Funkwhale is your Spotify replacement free, open, federates everywhere.
... And you can start anywhere, set up an account anywhere and pull in content from everywhere.
You can do likewise for 'pushing' content everywhere and interact with everyone.
Magic, right?
This is what #web was meant to be, no walled gardens.
Yes, hopeful thoughts, but I think Jeff's premise is robust because this thing is so distributed that if one corner is broken, the rest will really around and after all, any of us can set up a server and work with it. It's larger than Mastodon, it's the ecosystem that matters.
I believe this is the point about defederating, wisdom of the commons. Servers can exist but if you have accounts on those servers, you can only go and play there. Others in the federarion will 'defederate', so those posts will not show up or propagate through the known fediverse. A little more complex than deep web IMO
