My colleague Julien Deswaef explains why organizations should run their own Mastodon server, so that they can control their own channel of communication

If you're wondering/worrying about Mastodon's sustainability have a look at a recent paper I co-wrote on the sustainability of open source projects. We described 3 types of OS sustainability (resource-based, interactional & infrastructural), and Mastodon's recent massive surge would appear to tick all 3 boxes! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

Hi, this is Greta. You are welcome to follow me here, if you prefer planet earth to planet mars.

It's actually pretty amazing that a open source product developed by a tiny non-profit, running on a network of servers self-funded by volunteer administrator and moderators has managed to absorb some portion of one of the world's largest for-profit social networks.

It's a miracle the whole thing didn't collapse or catch fire.

Great job everyone.

This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

Yes absolutely, it is a people's problem. To that end, if peer review process were to be situated where people _are_, that might be useful. At the moment, we have email requests, then a web form, and a submission process. How can we streamline it using federated media. I mean say the entire preprint paper is federated and peer reviewed and editors get the advantage of many eyes marking a paper. It's possible now with an open, widely embraced federated media.

I've been on Mastodon since early last year, though not too active, and it's great to see the new influx and interest.

Thought I'd mention this essay from @mmasnick from 2019, which was one of the things that got me interested in the #fediverse. "Protocols not Platforms" is one of the best essays on #technology and #freespeech that I've ever read. It doesn't even mention #mastodon, but it groks the essence of the internet as it was and again could be.

I have been thinking about it. Using a Mastodon instance like qoto.org can address this pain point.
@freemo what do you think?
Qoto.org allows a complete ecosystem of scientific publishing to be built within . This is incredible. Sourcing peer reviewers on a platform like this would be easy IMHO.

Hey, so, we've hit 1,028,362 monthly active users across the network today. 1,124 new Mastodon servers since Oct 27, and 489,003 new users. That's pretty cool.
