This is encouraging: A protein that disrupts cells’ energy centers may be a culprit in chronic fatigue syndrome

American scientists have identified a protein that seems to play a part in chronic fatigue by screwing with the mitochondria ("the powerhouse of the cell", if you'll remember highschool biology).

At least on a petri dish level, they managed to de-fatigue human cells.

This might be an important step for #MECFS and #LongCOVID patients.

Cool job: the NAACP is hiring a Digital Justice Fellow to “critically examine and address the role of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data in the creation, maintenance, and furthering of racial inequality.”

Hat-tip to my co-worker for this one. Sitelinks for Search Engine Land have a weird misspelling. According to Urban Dictionary, to "earch" is to break into someone's home or car for the purpose of sleeping or stealing. ... So EEO's are burglars.

@keithgoode hey Keith! I'm glad you're on here as you have a ton of SEO knowledge. I have been missing your posts on Twitter (I left late last year).

Never take seriously those who ridicule low income people for having a smartphone or laptop.

“If they’re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???”

Because they’re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is luxury, try and survive a month without it.😐

@jared
I am thinking of doing what others are doing. Posting a problem a day from Newman's "Integral Matrices". To show that some Integer problems are neither too hard nor too simple :) Actually, the book is about "matrices over principal ideal rings" :) but integers form the backdrop.
Although, given the popularity of the subject, I would have to explain the terms associated with the problems (and probably progress through the theorems). I have always been fond of that book and would welcome a reason to refresh myself.

When I was in elementary school I got really into alternate number bases (binary, ternary, base six, etc.) as well as other cultures' representation of numbers (Egyptian hieroglyph numbers, Babylonian, Mayan, etc.). So I remember being really excited to learn about the brand new Inupiaq number system (base twenty, with its own symbols), and for a while I would write the date at the top right corner of each paper I turned in using the Inupiaq system. An update, three decades later: Unicode is adding support for these numbers, which are more properly known as Kaktovic Numerals. mastodon.me.uk/@tokensane/1101

I think Mastodon people should use the "like" button more.

People are told not to like because liking doesn't broadcast posts like boosting does, and the site needs boosts. And replies are preferred because they're deeper engagement or something.

But, on some level, we want people to keep using Mastodon. If someone posts something and followers like it, they know stuff is getting seen here and they'll want to keep using the site. I just don't see what's gained by holding back on the likes
