As a SCUBA diver the ๐Ÿ‘Œ hand symbol has been a symbol of our trade for many decades now. It is the diver-sign for "I am safe" so it has a deep and important meaning for SCUBA divers. But a few ignorant people see fit to call it a right dog whistle or even so far as hate speech. Now apparently a huge group of people who are attached dearly to the meaning of that symbol, particularly because of how many of our fellow divers we have lost to the depths, are told we are racist or alt-right because of what that symbol means to us or how we use it. It's so sad that people resort to such simplistic views of the world to fuel their own hate.

@freemo
Have you seen this interpretation as racist symbol in Europe too? Being in Italy I had no clue

@arteteco
I've never seen it used as a hate symbol. But in the UK they recently got it added to a list of symbols that are defined as hate speech. I've also had many people on Mastodon throw a fit about that symbol in my direction a.while back.

@freemo @arteteco it seems ridiculous to me. The ๐Ÿ‘Œis used in my groups to short hand okay, chefs kiss, sounds good, etc

Imagine if they took the โœŒ๏ธ and did the same.

@freemo @arteteco Isn't ๐Ÿ‘Œ being a hate symbol some old 4chan jape... that people actually fell for? On an organizational level? How?!

Honestly, this is kind of unbelievable.
4chan guys must be super proud of this one.
@freemo @smivan @arteteco TL;DR, someone online thought it would be funny to say "the ok hand gesture is a secret racist symbol, it stands for white power by forming a P with thumb and index and a W with the rest of the fingers" to then point out random people being "racists"
The joke being aimed at the kind of people that can't step out of their constant offended-at-everything status, it was taken at face value despite being an obvious attempt at cheap laughs.
@nerthos @freemo @arteteco @smivan

the decision to designate a known joke/prank as a hate symbol is on purpose because it further sets the precedent that speech is violence. the ADL know it's not genuine, they just don't care, and neither do the people who support them. they believe they are the ones that define hate, rather than identify it.
@mono @arteteco @freemo @smivan Oh definitely, if you remove the A from ADL you get a literal description of what they do. It wasn't the case once, decades ago, but it is now.

There's a simple solution to this though, laughing at anything they claim.The issue lies in getting normies to understand this and laugh too, instead of buying into the speech policing campaign.
@nerthos @freemo @arteteco As stupid as this is, it's also kind of amazing that people actually fell for it.
Leave it to 4chan to make the most ridiculous things transpire.

They should try to make Mickey Mouse the next "secret racism symbol", that would be a nice slap in the face of Disney's evergrowing monopoly, hahaha.

I hope people will come to their senses and undo this ridiculous proclamation of ๐Ÿ‘Œ being a hate symbol, though.
@nerthos @arteteco @freemo But to be honest I can't imagine anyone will take them seriously after this ridiculous blunder.
@smivan @arteteco @freemo Not as long as it keeps indirectly making money by as @mono pointed out giving the people behind it power.

They will only backtrack when they're way past the point of irrelevance.
@smivan @freemo @arteteco It's the ADL, they're clowns. It was a joke, yes, but the ADL is so desperate for anything to cling to to justify the money they spend that they'll gladly bite.
