Shells literally are rocks, as they are naturally occurring solid masses of mineral matter. In bivalves, shells are made of calcium carbonate, which comes in different structures called polymorphs. The most common are calcite and aragonite. Some bivalves use only one or both (bimineralic). Aragonite is often in shell interiors and can be built into mechanically strong forms like mother of pearl.
