So far I'm absolutely loving Mastodon! It it everything I looked to get rid of in Facebook/Twitter etc... The only thing that bothers me is there are too many people with anime profile pics and japanese nicknames posting furry/loli/borderline pedo content.
@freemo hmmm but what if it's one of the "big" ones like the mastodon social? I will be banning a huge proportion of the fediverse :(

@biomedmax As far as I know the MS strictly forbids nudity and lolicon. So if thats the case lolicon from them should be rare but if you see it you can probably report it and expect the account to be removed.

@biomedmax I use filters to block keywords and (since I run my own server) I block federation with servers that are clearly dedicated to stuff I don't want in my life. Works well so far.
@justin when I become more tech savvy, I'll create my own instance too xD Just out of curiosity, how much does it cost monthly overall? Maintaining a server, a domain etc...
@biomedmax I run a small Joyent Triton Datacenter cluster (3 machines) that I've had for years, so it's hard to break out the costs of the one VM for Mastodon. :) But in general, it would probably cost $20/month if you used a VPS.
I pay more than average to my ISP ($135/month) because I'm remote (it's dedicated terrestrial wireless) and I have a /29 subnet of public addresses.
Domains are cheap - like $9.99 a year in some cases.

But if you stick to your local fed and your not in a creepy one you don't see that stuff and it's fantastic 😀
If I look at the federated timeline though it's just a firehouse of porn, furries and other things I can't unsee lol 😂

@biomedmax you can easily just block whole servers if it has content you dont want to see. There are only a small number of servers that allow lolicon and by blocking those servers on your account you're good.
