every big company/project with much funding who just joins mastodon.social instead of running their own instance isn't interested in helping the fedi. it's just virtue signalling.
@CapitalB big companies have enough money and menpower for their own instance. the fediverse is about decentralization.
if they want to lease an instance that also is fine, but just joining the biggest instance for internet points is bullshit.
@bonifartius
Think there are some thing your fighting for there that are worthy but again if people understood what it is and didn't have to do it inevitably backwards (joining this that and learning in general) then I think it's a bit much to ask a company considering just for a person it was / is hard enough just to get head around it (not just money or paying someone else, it's still 10years to understand how instances are like email providers but unlike them in many ways)
Usually this kind of response is from seeing something else being abused or not done right, protective etc... so if I can ask as it's interesting "Why do you care about that?" and what context... any specific contexts?
Mostly (if it's in general you're mentioning) then it's a good thing for anyone not to be mined even the other bastard companies... just to reduce things down as overall win in a constant way.
@freeschool if a company would've joined before twitter getting bought by musk it would be a bit different (still should have their own instance).
now, after the fact, it just feels like riding the wave of "omg we fear free speech", therefore virtue signalling.
side note: your english is a bit hard to understand, is it your native language using shorter sentences and less parentheses might be better :)
@bonifartius
That's the thing about being good; it's not always about expecting people to do the before and after or what they should have done... (of course it helps) -
it's about looking past that...
...more about the 'at least' this and 'at least' that is happening in the now and as the overall win if really it's not too draining of resources and avoids the googlismus :)
Even if we take a bit of the hit for them in resources it's a win for them not to go elsewhere and a win for humanity every day they use this and not that, And meanwhile they practice a bit of free software etc :)
Have to be giving bonifartius knowing also we're all losing anyway... can't not give it :) and can't expect even mostly 'optimals' or ideals happening. It's just like humbly taking whatever we can get knowing it all adds up...
I don't think it would work feeling bad about the timings of people jumping in late or for wrong reasons (ok mabye a bit) but not holding it too much against them because we too also realised about a software way too late or something else... and it's best to forget about it and keep moving on to reduce that other stuff...
We too didn't see the importance of something until it was too late almost in this or other things.
Humans are like and mostly about when 'push comes to shove' - this is just life and almost can't scold people for that.
Thanks for the tips in sidenotes. I'll post about this soon. This was already long enough I hear you :)
@freeschool
i think i just don't regard companies/the government as "people". as they are organizations they are (or are supposed to) be highly rational.
i now see some companies going for the least effort way of opening an account on mastodon.social. i assume someone in the public relations department just read an article somewhere that "all the cool kids are doing mastodon.social now, because elon is evil free speech". this doesn't help the fediverse or decentralization in any way. it's just low effort virtue signalling for me.
even if i despise the EU, i have to admit that at least they started their own instance instead of just using mastodon.social as twitter replacement.
@bonifartius
Yeah I get it but as more 'godly' ones (goodies) at least in this field 'we are the ever-forgiving' and 'ever accepting' of basically stupid of people... lol though I think of people as clever in their own way, and try not to use stupid unless it's a specific field which yeah computers are far ahead of most...
if you consider we even got to this point considering the leaning tree of life ever toward money, then actually it's not that bad of a blip it is, actually it's not that bad a few hundred years instead of dynasty's of non Mastodon lol :)
Yeah I'm not too serious here but better I think looking at the good even from the escapees from lack of choice or even if it's fashionable... like whatever, get in before the monsters get you
Opinions aside a bit it's the more technical victories or even low effort virtue signalling as long as they are using it and being less abu$ed (which in turn churns less power for them).
Call me generous or tatical but generally I think that's the way to wear down such patterns even in ignorance from mainstream or individuals. I probably think it's a waste writing much more about it indicating my exist from conversation- lol
Mastodon for masses ! heheehe
and my latest picture about new topic I'm learning DRM (Media restrictions and locks)

@bonifartius ???
Explain.
Ah I now saw mastodon.social - but there are many others. I dont expect them to set up their own.
And they can lease so e for 10 bucks a month.
