does anyone remember when the whole "hate speech" and "misinformation" spin started?
9/11 was definitively the turning point for our future but i think the "free speech is evil and has to be censored" idea appeared later. somewhere in the 2010s?
i more and more feel like in a dystopian novel now. things are getting vague in you mind and all records are manipulated already.
@CapitalB that might actually be the moment, yeah!
@bonifartius ohne Gamergate kein Trump. Without Trump Sars-II in 2017, cold Winter in 2019/2020 etc.
Just my unfounded opinion.
@bonifartius I think the term saw increased usage when governments started losing their quasi-monopolies on misinformation.
@geopol my point is, things were labeled "conspiracy theory" and just ridiculed. that was going on for decades by then. the spin that the "conspiracy theorists" are _dangerous_ appeared somewhere in the 2010s but i can't pinpoint it to an event. the guess of @CapitalB does feel kinda right though. i have to research that a bit.
GG might be a coincidence or a catalyst.

@cowanon i'm pretty sure i heard the misinformation label earlier than 2020, but as i said: things are getting vague in my mind ;)
@igelsQTs nope, what have i missed?
@igelsQTs sure. the thing i'm interested in is the moment when it stopped being "haha look at that tinfoil hat" and started being "that's dangerous misinformation, terrorist!" though. what was the victory?
@bonifartius Gamergate.
