I just delivered a ThinkPad L15 laptop.

Upgraded to 32GB memory, 1TB nvme SSD. This laptop has two memory slots. Looks to be a good reliable design.

Do you have any advice for people who have a lifetime of IT experience and want to try a side hustle like what you're doing? Asking for a friend
I do!

It is difficult to do full time and make enough, which is what I am doing. I've been in business for 15 years so I have a lot of repeat customers now.

I also started an email newsletter around 8 years ago. If I hadn't have done that, I probably would not have survived.

However, if you are wanting to do stuff for fun and profit on the side, it is different. I have some ideas that I could certainly talk over.

Depends on if you want to sell stuff or offer services.
For fun, pick a computer you like to refurbish, do some upgrades. List it for sale.

If no one buys, you still have a computer you like.

ThinkPad laptops are my specialty... but other laptop lines could also work well.

@matthew @mitchconner actually was thinking about doing this as a side gig, but then i'd have to deal with people xD

Yes, you would have to deal with people.

Sometimes it can be frustrating, but I usually find it rewarding.
I love helping deserving and appreciative people, specifically
Even just appreciative. That goes a long way in making me feel better about the work I do to help people.
I am a big believer in local economies as an alternative to #BigTech and banks.

In order to pursue those, getting better at relationships and working with people you don't completely agree with is vital.

I don't care if my customers are gay or whatever I just don't want them to expect a lifetime warantee
I usually give discounted services on the computers I sell. That way they understand that my time does have value, but I'm giving them a deal for continuing to do business with me.
1 year hardware warranty. So yes I do.

That doesn't cover someone accidentally stepping on their laptop or installing malware.
Yeah for me it's being blamed for anything that ever went wrong on any computer I had ever touched as a teen it was beyond tiresome the irrational stuff I was blamed for.
Setting the terms of the deal up front is a way to avoid that situation.

Sometimes people are unreasonable, but usually not. Question for those types of people would be "If you had bought this from Walmart, would you expect them to give you the kind of service you are demanding from me?"

@matthew @mitchconner i agree, i try to buy local when possible.

i just had enough people i helped who complained about something "not working" with free software. ignoring that windows is even worse, but with that you hear "it is what it is". the inconsistency annoys me :)
