hot take, aside hardware support linux desktop was much more interesting and fun 20 years ago. many cute projects doing graphical effects etc. back then.
now desktop linus is lile mac vs windows. two sides of the same boring coin constantly reinvented to be incompatible with the other side.

@bonifartius Free take, the GNU/Linux-libre desktop has been more interesting and fun since GNU Linux-libre, GNU boot and more free drivers have been released, as it has finally been made practical to use extremely fast computers in freedom.
You can still use compviz and the many cute projects now that were free software, as you can compile them and use them (although a few fixes may be required to get them to compile).
