@djsumdog @keith on the one hand I see in theory the merit of copyright and other IP protections provided that the duration is reasonably short

at the same time I also can't help feeling like fuck it, patronage systems might be inefficient and not support the same overall volume of output but at least they ensure high average quality. having an unencumbered commons and high quality works must have significant cultural value of its own. maybe it's enough to offset any loss in market efficiency

If you’re at the right place at the right time, with the right equipment, this is possible.

Last night, with guidance from transit-finder.com/, I positioned myself along the narrow line where the International #SpaceStation would pass between me and the nearly full moon.

I used a Fujifilm X-T4 shooting 4K video through a Celestron 8” SCT to capture the pass. Then, back at the computer this morning, put together these views with PIPP, Registax, and GIMP.

Quite pleased. My best yet.

I've gotten to the point in using Common Lisp that every other language feels clunky and dumb past the first 100 lines or so

It seems I've successfully made myself unemployable as a software engineer

Jaa, noch über ne halbe Stunde ist heute. Also.

#Fediblock Generally speaking, technological control over human behavior will probably not be introduced with a totalitarian intention or even through a conscious desire to restrict human freedom. Each new step in the assertion of control over the human mind will be taken as a rational response to a problem that faces society, such as curing alcoholism, reducing the crime rate or inducing young people to study science and engineering. In many cases, there will be a humanitarian justification. For example, when a psychiatrist prescribes an antidepressant for a depressed patient, he is clearly doing that individual a favor. It would be inhumane to withhold the drug from someone who needs it. When parents send their children to Sylvan Learning Centers to have them manipulated into becoming enthusiastic about their studies, they do so from concern for their children’s welfare. It may be that some of these parents wish that one didn’t have to have specialized training to get a job and that their kid didn’t have to be brainwashed into becoming a computer nerd. But what can they do? They can’t change society, and their child may be unemployable if he doesn’t have certain skills. So they send him to Sylvan.
@Leyonhjelm It's only dystopian because it's far-removed from what's considered the norm at the time. We don't notice we're heading towards it since it edges closer too slowly for us to notice. By the time it's adjacent, it's too late.

Happy new year! Another year means another year-long keogram! Every 15 seconds throughout 2022, my trusty all-sky camera took a picture of the sky above the Netherlands. Combining these 2.1 million images into a year-long keogram reveals this picture, which shows the length of the night change throughout the year (the hourglass shape), when the Moon was visible at night (diagonal bands), and the Sun higher in the sky during summer, as well as lots and lots of clouds passing overhead.

TIL there's a technical name for why ideas happen in the shower: the "default mode network" is a pattern of brain activity, measurable using fMRI, that happens when we're unfocussed. When the brain goes into idle mode (reduced activity), this part of the brain actually becomes *more* active. What does the default mode network do? Research is ongoing, but part of it definitely seems to be making connections, which is associated with curiosity and creativity.
