@moth @GAGOOT @MK2boogaloo @Zerglingman @istvan I think it needs to be at least three different specs, it's got more inappropriate coupling than Epstein Island at present. One protocol spec, one document format spec, one set of design guidelines for the browser, all of those independent, and leave off the transport layer stuff. I don't think it's a good spec but that's the main fundamental flaw.

The web took off because it was more flexible (legally and technologically) and it was easier to implement. Gopher was encumbered by licensing and some pretty rigid guidelines. I think anything that wants to displace the web will need to adopt that kind of thing. I think Sir Tim's initial notes are a better starting point than Gemini if it's done from scratch, but if it were my project, I'd leverage existing infrastructure by just doing a subset of HTTP/1.1.
