You know what is also infuriating? How many children have I sacrificed for this bloody country since I can't afford them but it's still not enough? They would have us all single and lonely to solve the housing crisis. Then importing strangers into the country to look after us when that was historically the role that our children would have had... and our small communities.

Mastodon is one piece of software. People here use Pleroma/MissKey and many many others.

It was one thing when Mastodon and related servers had relatively limited like minded people so things were under control

It was never like this. I know you’re new, so I suggest you keep your server open and don’t start blocking people willy nilly. Just observe, follow random people you find interesting, chat and watch interactions. Since you’re new, you’ll quickly see how one half of the fediverse doesn’t see the other half. There are tons of instance blocks. Just by replying to some people, you may get put on block lists. I think observing this behavior is very valuable, but not everyone agrees.

Fediverse (not Mastodon) is not new. It’s an old and very fragmented network.

No no no and no. Absolutely not. There is literally no such thing has hate speech. If you believe in hate speech, then you do not believe in free speech. If you believe in free speech then you cannot believe in hate speech. The fact is that hate speech is just speech that one subjective person does not like. Sometimes it’s hateful and sometimes it’s just a different political opinion. If you can’t get past that you’ve already lost.

Has this not given you insight onto the fact that people are literally afraid to speak their moral convictions for being labeled? It baffles me that academics don’t recognize this. It’s straight out of the text books.
