@scy Dammit. I’ve been loving the lack of ads using Kagi.

RIP Niklaus Wirth (1934–2024)

Thank you for Pascal, the programming language I and many others got started with.

I just finished day 22 of Advent of Code. I've tried a new approach for the last two problems I've done, and it worked out well.

I've read about "rubber duck debugging", where you explain what your doing to somebody else, event a rubber duck, to help expose issues.

I've also heard people say that writing is an excellent way to clarify your own thinking, even if nobody else reads it.

So I tried writing a blog entry, step by step, as I worked through these two problems. It was very enjoyable, and didn't seem to take much extra time.

I intend to keep this up for the last three problems of 2023 and see how it goes.

@GottaLaff As an RN, I feel strongly: at least in hospitals, masks should be mandatory, now and forever.

They laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian – they’re not laughing now.

@travisfw I’m wondering about the second lock. Maybe that was for the rear wheel and frame?

The New York Times once published an article saying that #Hitler wasn’t really that bad. He was just using #antisemitism as a way to attract followers and keep them excited about his political campaign.

The New York Times has recently published an article saying that #Trump isn’t really that bad. He is just using threats of #violence and #authoritarianism as a way to attract followers and keep them excited about his political campaign.

It’s a good thing they have “safe” bike parking at the SEA airport.

NPR did not start off the year well. Instead of reporting on the differences between the candidates, and how they want to changes things if elected, we got more updates on the horse race.

The only mention of differences in this report was that they candidates have "starkly different visions for the country". Nothing about how those visions differ, or what those differences would mean for us citizens.

I like Catherine Rampell's (@crampell) "New year's resolutions for the media". With a massively consequential election season coming up, we need the media to report on the differences between the candidates, not just the horse race.

How will 2025 be different under Trump or Biden? Which of them has promised to send the Justice Department after his enemies? Which has had success bringing the economy back after COVID, and what are his plans for the future? How is the Inflation Reduction Act doing, and what are the prospects for 2025? Would Trump undo it? Who has plans for giant detention camps for suspected immigrants?

Oh my! I've found my new favorite website of all time: cyclingfallacies.com/

A list of all kinds of uninformed reasons people give for not making it safer and easier to bike, with rebuttals. This is exactly the kind of thing the internet is useful for!

It's available in many languages, and you can help translate it. The content is CC licensed. It's great!

Thanks to the fantastic podcast Bike Talk for letting me know about it!

Ever wonder why when you were a kid in Oregon, you learned about the Iroquois and Cherokee tribes of the Eastern USA but nothing about local Native Americans? Why you learned about the pioneers crossing the plains on the Oregon Trail, but nothing about what they did once they arrived?
...Or maybe you didn't even notice how much was left out until this very moment, reading my words?
Here is the missing piece.
"Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley" by David G. Lewis.
Fair warning, this book made me so upset that I cried. Not at the author, he's done an excellent job. At the astonishing cruelty, violence, and dishonesty shown to native people by (many) white settlers. At how little they asked for, and still didn't get. At how little is left of the ecosystems that sustained people and wildlife and were carefully maintained by native people. At how much astonishing wealth has accrued to those who stole from natives, even to the modern day.
Land acknowledgement statements are not enough! If you are a white person in Oregon, you need to read this.

My favorite mobility policy of 2023: Banning right-on-red

Inherently dangerous to pedestrians, ROR was widely adopted in order to conserve gas during the 1970s oil crisis (which, you might notice, ended decades ago).

Ann Arbor ditched ROR this year, and DC is about to. Denver, Chicago, and San Francisco may as well.
