In case you're in #K12CSEducation and like many others, wondering if and how things will/should change in light of #ChatGPT, here's the answer from the horse's mouth ;-)
P.S. I believe I have a better (more detailed) answer for Q2 :-)
Happy #CSEdWeek2022, all!

Precedents like the German government running a Mastodon server are important beyond the obvious reasons. They reinforce the urgency of serious public funding for open code.

If we treated open code as part of the essential infrastructure of the 21st century and funded it at billions of USD/EUR as opposed to tiny grants here and there, the "fediverse" model of interconnected, self-governing communities would become the norm, not the exception.

I've been hearing about a lot of all the annoying things the bird site is known for happening at Mastodon.

It was puzzling because, tbh, I don't, which is good because I don't want to.

Then it hit me why. Early on, I discovered github.com/nathanlesage/academ which does nothing other than list academicians who are on Mastodon and the lists are--generally--formatted so they are easily uploadable as a follow list.

Since I really like to see info about the latest thing in just about any field of study, I started uploading the lists.

I'm only about halfway through all the categories and, lo and behold, I'm following over 4,500 academicians in about 20--so far--different fields and I have discovered something.

Homophobia, transphobia, and just about every other phobia you can imagine are all pretty damned rare among academicians. And they all tend to talk about pretty interesting things.

Just so you know my weirdness, my idea of background music while I'm at my computer is internet talk radio at low volume in a language I don't speak. Anything but Russian. I don't like Russian right now.

On the flip side of this, I ran across a list this morning of Mastodon *instances* that seem to run from just plain rude to outright vile so you can ignore or partake as you like.

The moral of this story is that you can literally make your own "algorithm" here and it's even encouraged and supported by list makers.

It turns out I unknowingly overwhelmed and pushed aside the undesirable with desirable. It's pretty nice.

It kind of makes me think that when Folks are left alone to take care of themselves, they do.

My 2 cents.

I keep hearing that #Mastodon is not likely to replace #Twitter. To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the #Linux desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace #Windows, but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.

Today's M7.3 Tonga region earthquake at 2022-11-11 10:48:45UTC recorded in the British Isles on the network. See: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquake. Uses , & folium libraries. Waves travelled via the core.

If you download your Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a Python script to convert a Twitter archive to markdown or other formats: github.com/timhutton/twitter-a

Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.

Here’s a bonus toot. I’ll give a free virtual author visit to any school/library who wants one if you can work out how to follow me and ask. (Fairly confident in my lack of followers that this won’t be a problem) #schools #education #literacy #childrensbook #edutoot #kidslit Can you retoot? Be my guest!

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

My profile background picture is Dalle 2's interpretation of a single plum floating in perfume served in a man's hat...Moe served it up without missing a beat...just like Dalle 2.

Hello Mastodonia, I will be an consumer...and sometime contributer. Everyone else seems so much more qualified and interesting.

First photo. The tech angle is that I controlled the scoreboard at my son's basketball game. The good guys won.
