Which one to believe 😐
#Strava app vs
#BikeCitizens app vs
my #eBike's odometer

I'm inclined to think the odometer is closest to the truth. My bike's got the wheels, it should have a better measure of the distance it traveled, right?

Bike Citizens and Strava are based on #maps & #GPS. That can't be so bad.

Wouldn't be so weird if the difference between those 3 readings was just 1km or less. But it's greater than that. 🤷‍♀️

Which one to believe?

Well, assuming you set up your odometer to the correct wheel diameter/circumfence, you're odometer readings won't be too bad indeed. Yet, it'll depend: mine does wireless between the wheel and the odometer and glitches out every now and then losing sometimes several hundred meters travelled.

Problem with all GPS based methods is that the raw GPS track is noisy as hell. Your raw track will usually be much longer than the true track. That's why all apps and navis use something like a maximum likelihood estimator to either smooth the track out or to pin it to map material. This means figuratively speaking that your track will always run in the very middle of the road it's selected to be the most likely you're on. That can under certain circumstances be off by quite a lot.

All three have their weaknesses. The truth will be somewhere in their combined neighbourhood.

Oh wow! Thanks! 😃

Yes, the odometer is set correctly. I do notice that #Strava tracks are the worst, sometimes really glitchy. #BikeCitizens app is smoother and the distance count is closer to my bike's odometer reading.

I guess I should ignore the distance report on Strava then. 🤔

@evelyn
but sadly the #Bikecitizens app will not be updated anymore. I liked it very much, but after the company ended, I switched back to #osmand.

The company is dead?! 😳 How are they still able to charge? And wouldn't they make an announcement if they're closing down their business? There's nothing on their website that says that. 🤷‍♀️

@di0v0n
Nooooo!! 😭

"The Graz-based company #BikeCitizens Mobile Solutions GmbH is insolvent
... reasons given are the aftermath of the pandemic and the energy crisis
... the operation was recently discontinued
... bankruptcy proceedings have been opened at the Regional Court of Graz. The operation is currently stopped, the continued existence of the company questionable."

See, this is what happens when people don't pay for services. 🤨

Pay up, people! #cycling

@evelyn
I paid for the app, but i think there were just too many mistakes in the management. Pricing was not very customer friendly: I only ever paid for the annual subscription when it was discounted. Because paying €50 for the year is way too high.

@di0v0n
Oh yeah. I did get the annual subscription at a discount. 🤔

50 euros is a lot. Maybe it's a normal price for Europeans but they should consider international customers too. Then maybe they'll have more subscribers. Kinda like the pricing Netflix, YouTube and Spotify have for international customers.

@evelyn No, is also not a price for European customers.
I have a few apps that I pay for and bikecitizens was by far the app with the highest subscription. So they will hardly have sold any subscriptions. Which is why they offered a discount pretty quickly.

@ck2
yes the found new investor.

you can also buy again the smartphone mount Finn.
@evelyn

@di0v0n @ck2
Awesome! 😃 Hopefully they'll rethink their business strategy.

They need to get more #cyclists all over the world willing to pay for the service. Maybe a pricing strategy like what Spotify and Netflix do to attract users from other regions* where their regular pricing for Europe* just won't fly. Or maybe a 1-time charge for access to whatever special feature for a period of time, to cater to budget-conscious people. #BikeCitizens
