"Big Pharma involvement in IL-12 is fading fast. Days after Bristol Myers Squibb punted its IL-12 fusion protein, AstraZeneca has jettisoned a gene therapy to dial down its interest in the cytokine for the second time in as many quarters."

Interesting commentary this. Bottom line, #vaccine effectiveness is not all in the antibody titre.

Co-administration of #COVID19 & #influenza #vaccines may increase uptake of both and still both be as clinically effective as when given apart.

"We wanted to understand how goblet cells control the amount of mucus they secrete and why autophagy is needed for proper goblet cell function. Here, we show that autophagy relieves ER stress in goblet cells to facilitate mucus secretion."

In our recent "Inversion Invasions" paper we studied the conditions under which inversions invade genomes and become involved in adaptation. We found that inversions were more likely to be involved in adaptation when the genetic basis of the adaptive trait was highly polygenic. #EvolgenPaper #EvolutionPaper #PopulationGenetics @royalsociety royalsocietypublishing.org/doi We developed this plot to visualize how inversions capture and gain genetic variation through time.

Last Fall I wrote a column for Nature Medicine that touched on the FDA's Animal Rule, used in the approval of anti-smallpox drugs due to the difficulty in designing ethically acceptable efficacy screens.

"As the anthropologist Joseph Masco put it, through these simulations the government ‘sought to make mass death an intimate psychological experience while simultaneously claiming that thermonuclear war could be planned for alongside tornados, floods, and traffic accidents.’"

Nice piece: “Stop the peer-review treadmill: I want to get off”. I think the days of pre-publication peer review are already numbered. To maintain it there needs to be better incentives - and I don’t mean payment! Recognition of peer review activity as a scholarly contribution would help a lot.

'But for all the ground that’s been gained, the road ahead is arduous. Long COVID still lacks a universal clinical definition and a standard diagnosis protocol; there’s no consensus on its prevalence, or even what symptoms fall under its purview.'

"Here, we have identified a population of innate lymphocytes that we term tissue-resident memory-like natural killer (NKRM) cells. In response to murine cytomegalovirus infection, we show that circulating NK cells were recruited in a CX3CR1-dependent manner to the salivary glands where they formed NKRM cells, a long-lived, tissue-resident population that prevented autoimmunity via TRAIL-dependent elimination of CD4+ T cells."

"This systematic uncertainty in career prospects further tips the scale against researchers from underrepresented groups7, those who are less able to flexibly respond to emerging career opportunities (for example, through geographical relocation or by working overtime) and potentially even those who prioritize research quality over their personal employability."

What a heartbreaking novel. I saw Kasdan's film version in the 80s, a very good movie with one of the all time best siblings castings (William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Ed Begley Jr & David Ogden Stiers).

But Tyler's book is even better.

"Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a receptor for capsaicin and noxious heat, has been one of the most compelling targets for analgesics. However, systemic inhibition of TRPV1 is an impractical approach as a pain killer, since systemic antagonism induces hyperthermia. Two articles in this issue of the JCI report phenotypes from separate, rare missense mutations of human TRPV1."
