'A ocupação dos colonatos não foi feita sem violência. As terras eram habitadas e cultivadas pela população local. Por exemplo, em Angola, “um senhor que teve um alto cargo no sector da agricultura disse-me que aquelas casas, aquelas palhotas, foram arrasadas a bulldozer para se estabelecer o colonato de Cela”

'Many politicians, pundits, and the general public now favor the lab leak idea. Most scientists, particularly virologists, do not. This schism threatens their legitimate and ultimately socially important work, as outlined in a peer-reviewed publication published on August 1 in the Journal of Virology that was written by 41 virologists. I am one of them.'

'The idea of ‘plant behaviour’ may seem odd, given the association of the word ‘behaviour’ with animals, including humans. When we think of classic animal behaviours – dancing honeybees, dogs wagging their tails, primates grooming each other – we may wonder what there could possibly be in plant life corresponding to this.'

Auguste Lepère's "Study for the woodcut 'Bassin des Tuileries'" breathes life into late 19th-century Paris. The young girl by the pond captures innocence amidst elegant fashion. What stories do you think this scene tells about its time?

'The number of pathogens that could trigger the next pandemic has grown to more than 30, and now includes influenza A virus, dengue virus and monkeypox virus, according to an updated list published by the World Health Organization (WHO) this week. Researchers say that the list of ‘priority pathogens’ will help organizations to decide where to focus their efforts in developing treatments, vaccines and diagnostics.'

'The Americans agreed. But, no less concerned with optics than de Gaulle, they had one condition: the French troops in question had to be white. The US was comfortable with spilling blood and spending treasure to free France, and then choreographing that freedom in a way that gave significant credit to the French for delivering it. What they could not tolerate was the sight of one of Europe’s most symbolic cities being rescued by Black troops.'

'None of the committee members, Shapiro observes, “had ever seen a Federal Theatre production.” Nor did they have much knowledge of theater more broadly: one of the committee members, Joe Starnes of Alabama, became an object of ridicule when he unwittingly asked if Shakespeare’s contemporary Christopher Marlowe was a communist. The Dies committee wanted to gut a program they knew almost nothing about. It seems telling that the committee’s 124-page report did not mention a single play.'

"Air New Zealand Ltd.’s decision to ditch its 2030 emissions target suggests more #airlines will also have to confront a harsh reality: There’s simply not enough sustainable fuel or new, more-efficient aircraft.

“When the general public is calling for a decarbonized world, it puts pressure on these airlines and their social license to operate.” "

'It was inevitable that holding Olympic events in a river in which French people had recently threatened to shit en masse would be problematic.
Just weeks ago, this very column wondered if “getting dysentery” was about to become an Olympic event and that seems to be happening after the swimming part of the triathlon was repeatedly postponed because the Seine is just too dirty.'

'Kowaltowski is one of countless researchers who report they’re too strapped to pay these article-processing charges (APCs), which can reach more than $12,000 per paper and are becoming the dominant business model for scientific publishing. Publishers tout fee waivers or discounts for researchers in need—but obtaining them is cumbersome, authors say. That’s a worry especially in the Global South, but even some authors in wealthier countries say they end up paying APCs from their own pockets.'

'Thus, here we asked whether B. bassiana could damage the Drosophila brain via Toll-1, Wek and Sarm. We show that exposure to B. bassiana reduced fly lifespan and impaired locomotion. B. bassiana entered the brain and induced the up-regulation of AMPs, as well as wek and sarm, within the brain. Exposure to B. bassiana caused neuronal and glial loss in the adult Drosophilabrain. Importantly, RNAi knockdown of Toll-1, wek or sarm concomitantly with infection prevented B. bassiana induced cell loss.'

Data centers now consume 21% of all the electricity in Ireland, more than all its urban homes. Cloud providers still want more.

This drive for ever-increasing computation serves no one but the bottom lines of major tech companies. It must be stopped.
