Neutrophils are immune cells that do a lot of traveling (through the blood and into tissues) to get to sites of infection. Their large and stiff nuclei might it difficult for them to navigate through small spaces in tissues. So, how do they do it? Calì, Vargas, Viola, and colleagues showed that the signal that recruits neutrophils to target sites also makes their nuclei pliable so that they can squeeze through the gaps! In the upper right corner of the room we see the usual artifacts of the so-called book industry: a bound book, an unbound book, loose paper sheets in different formats, fresh and used papers. A learned setting and everyday business of dealing with paper and knowledge. This is what #BookHistory usually looks at. All these old and new, big and small books, and all kind of bookish formats were paper products, paper worlds made of paper. #BookHistory of early modern Europe is #PaperHistory.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT!

Reposting since I moved instances -- please spread widely.

We're hiring at the Assistant/Associate #Professor level in the Complex Human Data Hub at #UniMelb.

It's a combined #research and #teaching position, for researchers who study any topic within #mathematical or #computational #cognitive/#social science (broadly construed). We're especially interested in applications from #women and #minorities.

Closing date is Feb 2nd, and all details can be found at the link below. Melbourne is awesome and so are we so come join us!

"The great success of the AlphaFold programs poses the following questions: (i) What is the main reason for this success? (ii) What exactly do AlphaFolds do: prediction of the 3D protein structure based on its amino acid sequence and knowledge of the protein physics or recognition of this 3D structure, based on the similarity between some parts of its amino acid sequence and parts of sequences with already known 3D structures?"

Today I finished proofreading and classifying the outermost layer of somas in the #drosophila lobula plate cell rind through #Flywire, mapping over 270 cells!

I've broken down my findings of cell types here: discuss.flywire.ai/t/gallery-o

I'm so thrilled to have completed this first step in mapping the outer layer of lobula plate cells - all as part of #CitizenScience!

Now it's time to go another layer deep and repeat the process. :)

Well, I guess we will have to chemotax here from Twitter.

In an attempt to preserve whatever tweets I hold (and papers dear to me), I will retweet them here.

I hope the ex-twitter current Mastodon community is okay with that.

My intro: I am an Immunologist interested in Plasma cell biology. I used to work on T cells and still love them though.

Hi #ScienceMastodon #Introduction here! I study cell fate determination and growth regulation in #Drosophila for my #PhD. Currently wrapping up at UMass Boston, and moving on to the #postdoc position soon at UMass Chan Medical School to explore new areas in epigenetics. Delighted to be here!

Hello Mastodon Science. My lab at Yale studies innate immune defense against respiratory viruses. Some of our recent work has focused on viral interference, a phenomenon in which one viral infection can temporarily protect from another. This article discusses the field, and is thought provoking in light of the current resurgence of multiple viruses. science.org/content/article/co

'We previously showed that delaying macrophage recruitment by clodronate liposome (CL) treatment compromises neutrophil resolution and heart regeneration, even when the infiltrating macrophage number was restored within the first-week post injury (Lai et al., 2017). Here, we examined the molecular mechanisms underlying the cardiac repair of regenerative PBS-control hearts vs. non-regenerative CL-treated hearts.'

"More importantly, lecanemab might not work very well. From the data released so far, it is unclear what difference it could make to the devastating burden inflicted by Alzheimer’s. Some doctors warn that the benefits of the drug seem so small, patients may not even notice. But others counter that any effect on Alzheimer’s deserves celebration: it proves the disease can be beaten, or at least slowed down. It’s a start, a concrete foundation to build on."

I guess I should introduce myself #onhere: I am a postdoc in the Schier Lab at the Biozentrum (Switzerland). I am using #zebrafish to understand the #development of the nervous system. I love developmental biology of classic and non-canonical organisms, microscopy, loud music and comic books. Very much looking forward to meeting other scientists and cool people!
PS: I also help co-managing @ZebrafishRock , so make sure to give them a follow for the latest zebrafish community news

I've closed my Twitter account, leaving behind almost 11,000 followers in favor of the 210 I have here. This decision was tough to make, but it was principled. Elon Musk is trying hard to open the door for the DTs and MTGs of the world, and if they seize more control, he will have something to do with it. It's time to wound him, even if that means wounding Twitter first. I've had enough.

#Introduction

I’m a Post-doc at the University of Oxford, working on the evolution of bacterial genomes and pangenomes. I’m interested in bacterial cooperation and ecology, and how these might interact with horizontal gene transfer.

I’m on the train to Manchester for the #MicroEvo22 meeting, where I’ll be presenting a poster (no. 17). Looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

I’m a little late with an introduction post but we study #malaria transmission, particularly how changes in mammalian host #immunity and #metabolism control parasite transmission to and infection of the #mosquito host. We’re also interested in how malaria-induced activation of #basophils and #mast cells disrupts #intestinal barrier integrity. I’m passionate about #training that highlights the direct connections among #plant, #animal and #human health from the #cellular to the #ecosystem scales.

Do diverse microbial exposures inhibit type 2 immunity to allergens?

Recent paper from the Jameson lab suggests that co-housing SPF mice with pet store mice only temporarily inhibits ILC2 function.

nature.com/articles/s41590-022

The Coquet lab also has a preprint suggesting that high microbial content/diversity in mice does not inhibit allergic immune responses.
