'Why was the Celera compound initially neglected? Because it was only years later that researchers at the US government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed that overactive BTK drove the growth of CLL and certain lymphomas, so blocking it would inhibit these cancers. When Celera sold it to Pharmacyclics, it didn’t have any apparent application.'

We also have serial PCR evaluations showing that individuals who get HPV vaccines prevent HPV infections (or at least promote rapid clearance of the virus) which is a prerequisite for developing cancer:

A friend died from anal cancer, which could have been prevented with HPV vaccination, & I am tired of the “edgy” health professionals on Twitter who advise people to “exercise, sleep & eat good food” instead of getting HPV vaccination
Actually, not just tired, kinda angry

"Menopause costs American women an estimated $1.8 billion in lost working time per year, according to a Mayo Clinic study published this week. The paper examined how hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and the myriad other symptoms associated with this time of life affect women in the workplace. It’s the largest study of its kind to have been done in the United States."
Whoa. Let’s get back to rationale discussions in brain research:
Debate is vital … The discussion that followed … this is a shame ….

'Writing in Nature, Krishna et al.2 show that malignant gliomas can grow by modifying brain circuitry, thus taking cognitive function away from their host and ultimately leading to death. These insights might lead to fundamentally new approaches to glioma treatment and provide a means of limiting cognitive decline in affected individuals.'
'We demonstrate that while male NK cells display enhanced cellular fitness in mice, they show decreased effector function in mice and humans. These sex biases in NK cell composition and function were not completely due to hormonal differences, because they persisted in gonadectomized mice'
2. There is a very honest description of scientists' motivations. We are all "epistemically sullied", motivated by both curiosity AND desire for recognition.
It is critical to acknowledge this as we seek to reenvisage publishing. Denying the fact (how it drives pursuit of JIF, CNS, h index, competition, etc.) won't help us. The key is to understand this and then think how the system can be improved so distortions (Goodhart's Law, etc.) are minimized.
