How to Read an Aztec "Comic": Indigenous Knowledge, Mothers' Bodies, and Tamales in the Pot

This visual text represents some of the content from the article, Women, Childbirth, and the Sticky Tamales: Nahua Rhetoric and Worldview in the Glyphic Codex Borgia, by Felicia Lopez. Through the use of comic book conventions, readers are guided through the decipherment of logographic writing from Central Mexico and, in the process, are shown how colonization has limited our contemporary understanding of ancient Indigenous people. By offering reinterpretations of glyphs that reveal the cultural knowledge of women, this guided reading of a codex image paints a picture of Aztecs and other Indigenous people as intelligent, complex, and inventors of their own unique writing systems.

@marcrr Thanks for your feedback. We will provide information for sustainable travel to Helsinki. There are ferries from Sweden, Germany and Tallin. These are green(er) and very scenic ways to get here! For those that have to fly there are at least many direct flights to Helsinki. We will do our best and welcome any feedback.

"Here, we find that tissue-regeneration enhancer elements (TREEs) isolated from zebrafish can direct targeted, injury-associated gene expression from viral DNA vectors delivered systemically in small and large adult mammalian species. When employed in combination with -based epigenome editing tools in mice, zebrafish TREEs stimulated or repressed the expression of endogenous genes after ischemic myocardial infarction."

FAUCI: Of course it's at risk, that's why I have armed federal agents with me all the time. [Musk's tweet] stirs a lot of hate in people who have no idea why they're hating, they're hating because somebody [famous] is tweeting about it.

Just remembering how Jack Kirby was inundated by threats and complaints from Nazi sympathizers after the publication in 1941 of his famous cover showing Captain America punching Adolph Hitler.

No reason.

At one point, Kirby received a phone call from Nazi sympathizers who said they were downstairs in the lobby, and ready to show him "what real Nazis would do to his Captain America."

Kirby set down the phone, rolled up his sleeves, and headed downstairs.

By the time he got down there, they had run away.

Q: Your previous boss, former NIH director Francis Collins, lamented the lack of behavioural-science research to better understand misinformation about vaccines and other aspects of public health. Do we need to rethink how we incorporate social science into ‘hard’ biomedical science?

Fauci: Yes, we do. And you do it by just doing it. It’s not that difficult to incorporate a discipline of social sciences into the discipline of the hard sciences of developing vaccines. It is very disturbing that, in our country, we have 68% of the total population vaccinated with the primary vaccine for COVID. Of those, only half have received a single boost. And importantly, [despite] the availability of an effective BA.4/5 bivalent updated booster, only 13% of the eligible population has received it. That is very disturbing, and almost embarrassing for us that we have that low an enthusiasm about getting a life-saving vaccine.

#Introduction - My lab focuses on #olfactory system behavioral and #cognitive #neurophysiology. We do this in rats (mostly) and specialize in #NeuralOscillations as indicators of system states during cognitive sequences. I take a systems approach and my foundations are in dynamical systems.

I’m passionate about broad and deep scholarship and believe that scholarship is essential to progress.

I’m a proud graduate of #StJohnsCollege, Santa Fe #SJC, and view a classical education as one of the best things I’ve ever chosen to do (besides marrying my wife and raising our kids). My #liberalArts education informs every aspect of my scientific work.

Remaking this question for mastodon, let's see how it goes. If these guys have accounts please let me know!

Hey #microbiology people, what are similar microbe-specific bioinformatics resources like pseudomonas.com and Burkholderia.com? There's also actinobase and yeastgenome. #bioinformatics #genomics #bacteria

Hi everyone!

The Vincent lab twitter account completes its migration to Mastodon.
Follow us for cool #DevBio science, mostly working with #Drosophila. We are generally interested in the signalling activities that control patterning, growth and apoptosis in epithelia. Our #morphogen of choice is #Wnt.

Here you may also find the occasional rant from JP once he gets used to the new format. Until then, this account is mostly managed by postdoc Ines.

Hello everyone!

An #introduction: I'm an educator specializing in computational neuroscience and neuroAI. Specifically, I'm in charge of education for the new Kempner Institute and a lecturer at Harvard. I also serve as executive director of Neuromatch Academy 🌍

I care a lot about making computational topics open and accessible to everyone and love thinking about and sharing engaging tutorials, examples, visualizations, etc.

I'm excited to be here 😀
