This week, I highlight the work of Zhu et al. in Nature Immunology. The authors examined the effects of stress on the gut microbiota in mice and found that changes in a Lactobacillus species were associated with increased numbers of IL-17-secreting gamma-delta T cells in the gut. These cells migrated to the meninges and were associated with changes in behavior. Targeting this axis may have therapeutic benefits for patients with depression. 'Recently, a proof-of-concept study demonstrated the idea of “humanizing” zebrafish. Simply, introduced hematopoietic stem cells and human monocytes/macrophages into larval zebrafish retained tissue specific function.'

'Other Covid vaccine mandates have already been relaxed by colleges, local and state governments, and private companies. But the end of federal vaccine requirements will have an immediate impact on tens of thousands of Americans, as well as foreigners who travel to the United States.'

'Dr. Hinton said he has quit his job at Google, where he has worked for more than a decade and became one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of A.I. A part of him, he said, now regrets his life’s work.'

'However, these tumours often progress without therapy, which suggests the activation of mechanisms that trigger functional impairment of, or resistance to, antitumour immune responses. Indeed, a recent study showed that cyclic GMP–AMP synthase (cGAS)–stimulator of interferon genes (STING) activation in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells with chromosomal instability induced an interleukin-6 (IL-6)-dependent inflammatory response that promoted the survival of cancer cells'

'Gene therapies currently carry eye-watering price tags, putting them out of the reach of many who need them. High prices could diminish the willingness of government funders to pay for gene-therapy research. And that, in turn, would make it harder for research institutions to continue to attract top talent to the field. Researchers, especially health economists, must work urgently with industry and governments to find a more affordable funding model.'

"Mandelstam and Stalin shared an interest in Lamarckism. Stalin was taken with Lamarck’s theory that acquired characteristics could be passed on, a notion that appeared to back up his belief that Homo sapiens would evolve into Homo sovieticus. Mandelstam appreciated Lamarck’s idea that after reaching its peak with Mozart, evolution could go into reverse:

Perhaps before my lips the whispering was born,
In treelessness the wind was blowing leaves,
And those to whom our life work is bequeathed
Have long ago acquired their final form."

An important thing to keep in mind with all the talk about intranasal #Covid vaccines: this type of vaccine is tough to make. If they were easier to make, we'd have more of them.@dr_kkjetelina & @ENirenberg yourlocalepidemiologist.substa

A long & winding road.

"However, our efforts to identify a chemical inhibitor of apoptosis floundered. Whatever we tested either did not work or had only a marginal effect. We wondered whether components of the pathway might have built-in redundancies. If so, the project was dead."
