1. There's a great explanation of the oft-cited Why Most Published Research Findings are False paper by John Ioannidis that explains why assumptions made about how scientists general hypotheses mean this is not correct.
Others have pointed this out but Carl and Jevin give a very clear explanation of why, which is important given how frequently and uncritically this work is cited in our sphere 2/3
Calling Bullshit by @ct_bergstrom is a fascinating read that brilliantly summarizes issues around data interpretation, various logical fallacies, phony graphs, and misleading statistics.
That alone makes it essential reading but two other things stood out for me that may interest sci comm/publishing types. 1/3
90% of cancers reactivate telomerase. In our new preprint, we reveal that tumors that fail to activate telomerase trigger a stronger immune response, leading to melanoma regression. Our work also sheds light on the association between telomerase gene mutations and the immune system and provide a mechanism to explore the success of immunotherapies.

'But Eli Lilly’s preliminary donanemab results also reveal a sobering risk of brain swelling and hemorrhaging, side effects that the company disclosed may be linked to two—perhaps three—deaths in the clinical trial and that echo hazards seen with lecanemab, which is being marketed by Eisai and Biogen.'

Out now! 👇Over a century ago, Elie Metchnikov proposed that #aging is caused by increasing #intestine permeability and toxic #microbiota into our bodies. In our last paper provides evidence for this idea and a potential mechanism for “inflammaging”. #IRCAN #IGC #CNRS #zebrafish 🐟 https://doi.org/10.1038/s43587-023-00401-5
'A recent American study found that an elite class of principal investigators who hold three or more concurrent NIH (National Institutes of Health) grants grew in number over the past 30 years but, even after controlling for career stage and degree, women were significantly underrepresented. And despite evidence of diminishing returns for annual grants over US$600,000, the dollars remain concentrated in the hands of a select few.'
'For patients in a late-stage trial, the drug called donanemab slowed progression of the disease by 35 per cent compared with those who took the placebo during an 18-month treatment period. The decline in patients’ ability to perform daily tasks was 40 per cent lower for those on the drug.
However, the drug displayed severe side effects such as brain swelling and bleeding and three people on the trial died.'

UKHSA is doing a study to try to map out immunity to #mpox. It had been assumed mpox was a one-and-done type of infection, but there have been a few reports of what looks like repeat infections, like this recent paper in Lancet. https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPdf?pii=S1473-3099%2823%2900185-8 and https://www.gov.uk/government/news/study-launched-to-find-out-more-about-mpox-immunity

'In any case, it is remarkable that senolysis of a small fraction of senescent osteocytes may account for the robust bone-protective effect, further supporting the importance of osteocytes for bone metabolism and skeletal health. Given their crucial role in orchestrating bone remodeling and their high degree of connection, these few senescent osteocytes may be sufficient to cause functional chaos through cellular miscommunication.'
"To capture the complex interplay between the tumor antigenic landscape and anti-tumor immunity in lung cancer, we integrated genomics, transcriptomics, immunopeptidomics, spatial transcriptomics and multiplexed immunofluorescence (mIF) imaging to investigate the antigenic landscape in tumors with variable degrees of immune infiltration"

'We demonstrate that while male NK cells display enhanced cellular fitness in mice, they show decreased effector function in mice and humans. These sex biases in NK cell composition and function were not completely due to hormonal differences, because they persisted in gonadectomized mice'
'Writing in Nature, Krishna et al.2 show that malignant gliomas can grow by modifying brain circuitry, thus taking cognitive function away from their host and ultimately leading to death. These insights might lead to fundamentally new approaches to glioma treatment and provide a means of limiting cognitive decline in affected individuals.'
