"Public health experts say that when managing an infectious disease outbreak, communication is not part of the response. It is the response."
With many chapters now under my belt, I'm seeing that every book chapter I write unfolds in a bit of the same way, on repeat. It always gets there but I just wish it were a bit less painful:
Early wave) This topic/idea is fascinating. No one's really written about this and I have so many questions. Wow! Did you know???!!!
Middle wave) Boo-hoo, this will never work; I have no idea what to do with this; none of this makes any sense or connects together in any useful way. I hate this topic. Given that I can write about anything I want, why did I decide on this? This is all garbage; it's all a disaster. I'm never going to finish this book.
Final wave) I get it now and it all makes so much sense - I see how it all fits. I am so in love with this material and this chapter. In fact, I think I'll redirect my future (book/research) toward this topic, it's so amazing.
On to the next chapter ...
Do other authors get as emotionally invested in the process as this? I have no idea how to make it to the good stuff in any other way. But sigh ...

'By analyzing the genomes of 290 living people, researchers concluded that modern humans descended from at least two populations that coexisted in Africa for a million years before merging in several independent events across the continent. The findings were published on Wednesday in Nature.'

"To enable detection of which cells upregulate MHC pathways in vivo, we generated two novel MHC I and MHC II reporter mouse lines that express tdTomato when these pathways are activated, and used these lines to define their incidence and transcriptional characteristics in two mouse models of inflammatory demyelination."

'MalariaGEN is now a global community, with more than 200 researchers in more than 40 countries. From the outset it embodied principles of openness and data sharing, with Dominic often travelling to partner institutions to establish mutual trust. Together with training and the development of laboratories, this helped to ensure that the researchers gained the capacity to lead their own studies and dispelled any suspicion that rich countries were exploiting the resources of less-wealthy ones.'

'Critics of MCEDs also warn that a deluge of test results could put additional pressure on already overstretched health services. A Galleri pilot screening programme in Arizona for firefighters missed many instances of cancer, raising questions about accuracy. Companies might be putting profits above patient welfare by selling the tests before they complete the randomised trials required to prove they work and can save lives, they say.'

'Cuando hablamos de donaciones, tanto de sangre como de órganos, se genera una tensión entre la necesidad de evitar ponerles precio y el coste implícito del tratamiento de los tejidos. La sanidad pública y los profesionales que para ella trabajan son el dique de contención contra la mercantilización de la vida.'
