'Gullotta et al. explore ischemic stroke in aged mice and elderly people, identifying age-related alterations in stroke-induced granulopoiesis and characterizing a pathogenic signature of circulating neutrophils that is linked to poorer outcomes. Reversing the neutrophil phenotype in old mice by transfer of young hematopoietic cells improved tissue repair and regeneration after stroke'

That’s why future studies will depend on innovations in adversarial data access, ethics and privacy. Researchers should prioritize methods that don’t rely on companies, while supporting laws to require algorithm makers to collaborate with researchers.'

Honey Bee Social Immunity

by Roberto
Flying insects are key to the functioning of many ecosystems, where they play numerous important roles such as pollination. Thus, the sharp decline in their numbers is cause for great concern. From a human perspective, the observed demise of many honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations is particularly troubling because of their critical role in the food chain.

The story of Evan Moss and epilepsy - both moving and inspiring

Evan was born with a form of epilepsy. When he was 6, he wrote a book to help raise funds for a seizure dog to help alert his parents about when it was happening (you can still buy it here amazon.com/My-Seizure-Dog-Evan). Evan's book was so popular, he was also able to raise funds for many other patients as well.

Evan's seizure dog is named Mindy. When he was 9, he and his mom told his story and described all the ways his seizure dog helps him navigate his condition:

Evan is around 19 now. His family recently co-authored a paper with their doctor explaining epilepsy from a patient perspective. The TL;DR: Evan's dog is great, but patients like Evan need better Seizure Detection and Forecasting

Happy 552nd birthday to the great German artist Albrecht Dürer!

Dürer painted 'The Young Hare' in 1503, making this critter famous forever. His precision with watercolors is amazing. Present-day scientific illustrators would have trouble matching this level of photorealism without computer assistance.

@cyrilpedia my current favourite German compound word is "Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetzbefristungsdauerverlängerungsverordnung", a legal term that is so long that its acronym (WissBDVV) contains another acronym (the Wiss unfolds to WissZeitVG).

'Ajudados pelo bafo da crise climática, os mosquitos do género Aedes, que transmitem doenças virais, estão a conquistar novos territórios. Em Portugal, há uma rede de vigilância activa para detectar a sua presença. E se, por acaso, vir um mosquito que lhe pareça mais estranho, saiba que pode enviar a fotografia, e mesmo o corpo morto do insecto, para a morada do projecto Mosquito Web.'

"In the history of modern physics, there has never been a widely accepted theory in which a moving, directional sense of time is fundamental. Many of our most basic descriptions of nature – from the laws of movement to the properties of molecules and matter – seem to exist in a universe where time doesn’t really pass. However, recent research across a variety of fields suggests that the movement of time might be more important than most physicists had once assumed."
