In Utrecht, NL people have been falling into a pond because duckweed has been stressed by the cold and turned it red an looks exactly like a cycle path.

I have to laugh at the dark humour of several newspaper columnists filing their copy today with variations on "Good on Gary #Lineker for giving a voice to the voiceless and raising these issues against an authoritarian Government."

Yeah, because it's not as if these people could, I dunno, raise it themselves in their weekly newspaper columns or anything, is it?

@WillBlackWriter
Great article. For me, the most telling point made in this furore was the question put to the BBC DG by the BBC interviewer. She asked: would Lineker have been suspended if he'd instead tweeted in support of the government's policy?
The question was thoroughly ducked, but the point was clearly made. This isn't a free speech argument, it's the government (and right wing media) objecting to an unfavourable opinion held by a public figure.

RT @JohnSimpsonNews
An excellent, honest, straightforward account of the BBC’s ‘crisis’, from the BBC itself, naturally. You won’t find anything in the rest of the media as good as this: yet another reason why the UK and the world needs the BBC to be strong & self-confident. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64929269

1/ Dozens of mobilised Russians from Volgograd are reported to have died after being sent to fight in Ukraine without being given any ammunition. Their deaths are said to have been covered up subsequently, but independent Russian journalists have reported on their story. ⬇️

First, the very good news: Version 4.0 of The Ultimate Tape Archive, a compilation of Commodore 64 cassette-based software, has been released, with Internet Archive as the primary download!

archive.org/details/Ultimate_T

16gb of cassette based software, scans of the cassettes and inlays and instructions.

The even better news: The collection has ALL of them, emulated!

archive.org/details/ultimateta

That's 2000 tapes for you to enjoy.

Bingeable TV recommendation: Daisy Jones and the Six. (Amazon Prime)
A 70s rockband not unlike Fleetwood Mac revisit the highs and lows of their time together for a MTV style documentary. Although most of the action is in the era, with great costume and production design that really sets the tone.

The fun bit is going to be about 3:15pm where the BBC realise they're going to have to mute crowd noise in the Leicester Vs Chelsea match on MOTD, and probably several more.

Johanna Saunders writes:

"1930s Germany was all about rhetoric, ideology, othering, removal of rights, intimidation, propaganda and finger pointing which focussed on minorities/disabled /religion/sexual orientation etc.
War itself (1939) and the horror that followed (Wannsee / Holocaust 1942 etc) came later.

it’s about preventing future Holocausts from happening, and if the language you use is reminiscent to language used before the Holocaust, then it’s a moral duty to point it out."

"If Liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear"

This quote by George Orwell is carve in the very wall of BBC's Broadcasting House (next to the statue of Orwell)... What a joke!

@jonbutterworth Please don’t. Write to your MP. Write to Davie. Write to the BBC Trust. Flood the inbox of the inbox of the minister for culture. But cutting funds to the BBC is self defeating!

You have got to be kidding. Now saying won't even be operational at Euston until *2041*. At what point do and businesses call them on the sunk cost fallacy and stop this destructive scam.

Quick straw poll? Who thought that #HS2 was never, ever, ever going to get past Birmingham?

*entirety of the North of England raises their hand*

Correct. Well done, everybody.

If you're a scientist, engineer and currently pushing a children's book that is aimed at , it's not a good look when you only answer questions from boys.

The girls noticed. was only yesterday and it's fresh in their minds.

Might have just been you didn't spot any of the girls who raised their hands at your school visit / PR event / book signing, but you *must know* you've got to make that conscious effort.

FFS. It was known years before they poked the first spade into the ground that was a waste of money. Other countries are striving ahead with high-speed rail to connect the country, but oh no, not in Britain where it's all about who can make a profit.
Countryside, communities devastated, and funding could have gone to other infrastructure projects. bbc.co.uk/news/business-649019
