In blocking #Microsoft's acquisition of #ActivisionBlizzard, the UK #CompetitionAndMarketsAuthority has made history: they have stepped in to prevent a notorious, convicted monopolist from seizing control over a nascent, important market (cloud gaming), ignoring the transparent, self-serving lies Microsoft told about the merger:

"No Time For Caution" played on the Royal Albert Hall #organ by #AnnaLapwood. Gorgeous lighting and photography of the Hall that does make it feel like the interior of a steampunk spaceship.
Excellent piece on the Comment is Freed Substack about the short and long term impact of sanctions on Russia. https://open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/the-impact-of-sanctions?r=3z6z&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

Farmers in the US are getting sick of paying $80,000 for super-sized trucks that won't even fit into their barns.
They've been importing mini-trucks from #Japan that do the job and cost a lot less.
Sometimes you come across an article or documentary that you were not expecting to hook you in, that manages to combine a whole bunch of interesting issues in one amazing narrative.
This, from @ryanhoulihan is one of those, and covers AI, deep fakes, the music industry, culture and Britney Spears.
If you remember the Black Mirror / Miley Cyrus episode from a few years back, strap in, this is an even wilder ride.

Coffey's complacency is shocking. Govt's been in power 13 years - not 1 English river is in healthy condition & not 1 meets good chemical standards. Privatisation has failed - put water back in public hands so investment goes where needed #SewageScandal @Feargal_Sharkey @We_OwnIt

>> Without Soylent Green, maybe we would have never got Strange Days or The Matrix, Snowpiercer, or even Jupiter Ascending. Because the truth is, all of the sci-fi dystopias that followed Soylent Green are, in fact, made out of tiny parts of Soylent Green.

“Silicon Valley as a whole is still wrestling with how to reconcile competitive pressures with safety.”
➡️Are they though? It seems to me that those in charge (i.e. VCs and C-suite execs) are really only interested in competition (for $$).
“But ChatGPT’s remarkable debut meant that by early this year, there was no turning back.”
➡️False. We turned back from lead in gasoline. We turned back from ozone-destroying CFCs. We can turn back from text synthesis machines.

Tried to take some interesting snaps of the #LondonMarathon. Was aiming to get some interesting blurring effects with moving feet, but am out of the habit of this sort of creative muckaboutery and it's a tiny point & shoot camera, nothing proper.
Just another worried little citizen of this modern-day Pompeii. Techie at UCL, working on Process Automation with MS Power Platform. Scatterbrain, interested in education, languages, Space and lots of disparate things. sorry.
Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
