Here’s what The Counteroffensive is reading today:
Victoria Amelina has died following injuries sustained during the Kramatorsk restaurant attack.
She was one of Ukraine's brightest novelists, and had been covering war crimes committed by Russia.

"I believed in this Russian world, can you imagine? All my life I believed we were brothers!’ the poor man exclaimed, surrounded by the ruins of his beloved city.
It must be way more painful to realize where your true home is in such a cruel way...”
International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression Against Ukraine (ICPA) officially started operations today at Eurojust. The ICPA will support the preparation of crime of aggression cases, by securing crucial evidence and facilitating the process of case building at an early stage.
A very important step towards restoring justice. Grateful to Ukrainian allies who work hard together with Ukraine to make the future trials of Russian war criminals possible.
@davoloid @pluralistic Imo, taking money from investors can be a deal with the devil and one they eventually want a return on.
A few weeks back, #UCL Computer Science hosted @pluralistic who talked about #enshittification - how big corporate tech use bait & switch techniques wrt our personal data and usage of their platforms. A panel discussion followed the talk, on regulation and combatting such trends.

Still thinking about outcomes for #Russia, and #KamilGaleev has some interesting thoughts.
"In the modern English, the word “revolution” refers to an abrupt, linear change, more often than not in politics. Things transform to never return to the original status quo: that’s what makes for a #revolution. A truly revolutionary event constitutes a radical break with the past. And yet, #etymology of this word suggests that its original meaning used to be exactly the opposite."
I mentioned to my PhD chat group buddies that it’d be lovely to see them on Mastodon, and some have agreed to give it a go.
So I’m asking for help. In advance of them arriving, I’d love to be able to point them at this post and replies to find their connections. Are you doing a #phd too? What’s it about? Have you just finished one and have some advice?
Could you help me find as many PhD researchers as possible?
@Tendar Start boosting the accounts that switch over. You know the ones, Lets get the OSINT Network going!.
Sub communities have actually dried up because of this.

The sunk-cost fallacy is the death trap for every dictatorship, cult or doomed company. Instead admitting to have drawn the wrong conclusions, change directions and write off the mistakes, failed leader such as Putin double down on stupid and hope that perceived strength is just as good as real strength. But even children learn sooner rather than later that closing your own eyes does not make the inconvenient aspects of life disappear.
This denial of agency, claims that Ukrainians are under some foreign control, at best pawns on the geopolitical chess-board — is very visible in Kremlin's rhetoric.
Consider claims that NATO somehow made #Ukraine want to join it. Consider claims that the Maidan was somehow "manufactured" by the CIA.
Once you do, you might understand why the idea of Russia and the West agreeing on terms of peace in #Ukraine is an outright colonial idea.

As we're in the midst of another migration wave and this times sites reliant on the #twitter #API like #movetodon and #debirdify no longer work, remember it's massively more important than ever to boost posts and hashtag everything, stumbling across people you followed on the bird site is going to be harder than ever for new arrivals.
Welcome everyone! Some information about #Mastodon for #academics:
1) There are disciplinary groups that you can follow. If you tag them, they share your post with the community. Some examples: @sociology @edutooters @politicalscience @communicationscholars
2) Mastodon's search function only works with hashtags so you should use them (you can also follow them).
3) There are disciplinary and interdisciplinary lists of academics: https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon
You can also easily ask to be added.
BTW this is why it was stupid for all those government / emergency services accounts to resume posting on Twitter. Absolutely unreliable in critical situations
You’ll think me a naive fool but I’m appalled to discover that I am complicit in the Thames Water disaster. USS the university pension fund holds 20% of the shares. It just shows that the USS managers were happy to focus their “fiduciary duty” of pulling in dividends but clearly put no pressure on TW to act responsibly on environmental matters or on ensuring the long term viability of the business. In other words, USS “investors” were happy to asset strip the business.
(c) Imperils England by, say, abolishing 800 year-old human rights or by turning a tolerant, equalising culture into a police state or loads so much debt onto the State, which is then stolen by private interests, that the country's economic future is permanently handicapped.
This is called Accusation in a Mirror.
Accusing a scapegoat of the very acts you're using the scapegoat to justify doing yourself. This conceals your intention and deflects blame unto a scapegoat.

"May Putinists and Wagnerites kill each other and leave us alone"
Wagner mutiny revived the talks about ru collapse, but what was actually happening in the republics at the time? Just another worried little citizen of this modern-day Pompeii. Techie at UCL, working on Process Automation with MS Power Platform. Scatterbrain, interested in education, languages, Space and lots of disparate things. sorry.
Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
