Unpopular opinion: Apart from the one manager who led England to victory in the 1966 England World Cup (side eye), Southgate has been the best #England manager ever: WC QF and SF, two Euro finals.

#TimothySnyder : Political Violence: Reflections from the 1920s and 1930s
"Nothing in recent American political life resembles Trump’s call for “Second-Amendment people” to kill Hillary Clinton, his mockery of Paul Pelosi after an attempted murder, his belittling of Gretchen Whitmer after a kidnapping attempt, the stochastic violence he directs against critics to intimidate them and against his fellow Republicans to keep them in line..."
How does the relationship a developer has with the computing resources around them change when climate and ecology are brought into the picture? Does this produce unexpected other changes, for instance, I speculate without evidence that it might reframe your interactions with technology to be less abstract. Despite the massive crisis of climate concerns, is there a protective effect from this? Might this make some technology work feel less alienated from the world?
If you feel very powerless, try not to express this on to those people who have even less power than you.
Even if that's usually the only way that you can express how powerless you feel 🥺
What happened in and regarding Russia on Wednesday, July 10 (roughly speaking)? I summarize these musings and happenings as best I can for Meduza in a daily newsletter. Here’s the latest edition: https://meduza.io/en/brief/2024/07/11/the-real-russia-today
FFS celebrating non-white representation is not racist. The racists pricks who have reported her should be prosecuted for wasting police time.
To my absolute astonishment, many of the suggestions that we put to the fumehood replacement project team have been incorporated into the project. We still have a fair way to go to set up active heat recovery on the 36 hoods on our top floor.
There remain questions to be addressed and some of these require conducting a set of experiments on several of our bigger buildings ASAP. The potential energy savings are just mouth-watering, and at low cost. #UCLChemLivingLab
Labour needs to abolish the hereditary peers https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/07/10/labour-needs-to-abolish-the-hereditary-peers/ The 92 remaining hereditary peers in the House of Lords are a historical anachronism that preserves privilege for the aristocracy when that should have been gone long ago. It is time for them to go.
New feature! We've added another lookup to WhoCanIVoteFor.co.uk that tells you about the various elected people that represent you and your area.

"...critical to note is that these systems do not affect everyone equally, and marginalised communities, those with uncertain immigration status, or those reliant on state support are more likely to be impacted by automated decisions. This can lead to significant consequences, including bias and privacy violations."
I went to the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change Future of Britain Conference yesterday, and I wrote about it in my newsletter https://buttondown.email/justenoughinternet/archive/im-looking-for-a-man-in-ai-think-tank-trust-fund/
@rachelcoldicutt Dominic Cummings used to be my go-to example of a yokel taken in by the clownshow of Silicon Valley carnival barkers, but it appears I fogot about Blair.
I'll tell you something that I'd like to see #Starmer's new government do, and which would go some way to convincing me that they actually working for our benefit:
taking #covid19 seriously again.
Can we please bring back proper data collection? Free test kits? Encouraging people to stay at home if they test positive? Proper ventilation for schools and other public enclosed spaces? Mask mandates in healthcare facilities?
These things would collectively make a huge difference.
How many drawers full of dead electronics have you got? I've got boxes of dead drives, USB-TV receivers, digital microscopes, CD drives and minidisks.
So this isn't surprising. But the idea that you could implant miraculous electronics into a person and just walk away…
And this should be a warning about Mr Musk's Neuralink which has got so much hype and funding. It's like the charlatans who sell cures for cancer, AIDS, COVID etc…

Yes! Another series of Kleo coming on the 25th July. Excellent German spy comedy. Killing Eve meets Deutschland 83.
As of today I am going to just block the account of every "Biden should step down" post.
Can these people not see they are falling for the con?
Also, everyone should read Stephanie Jone's piece. She says what I have been saying, but better.
Just another worried little citizen of this modern-day Pompeii. Techie at UCL, working on Process Automation with MS Power Platform. Scatterbrain, interested in education, languages, Space and lots of disparate things. sorry.
Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
