I went looking for a small, dumb SMTP server that accepts all messages and dumps them into a Maildir and I found one!

He's talking about computers, but this could apply to much, much more. Including -- sorry to be topical -- political & social systems.

The Stoics prepared themselves for tragedy by visualizing the death of loved ones. A less philosophical & more pragmatic exercise is to ask yourself for each system you build or use, "what happens when this goes wrong?"
