I'm someone who argued fifteen years ago against Linux fanatics who wanted to pretend #Linux was a viable replacement for the average user for #Windows. As much of a #FOSS enthusiast as I am, that simple wasn't true at the time - Windows was a much smoother experience in general than Linux.
Today though, I can confidently recommend a major Linux distro and know that they'll have as smooth an experience as they would on Windows. Not (just) because Linux has improved by leaps and bounds, but also because Microsoft seem to be doing a great job driving Windows to the ground.
@DanielMReck @digital_carver have you taken a look at Ubuntu Studio @ubuntustudio ? Really fantastic for media. Low latency kernel and KDE Plasma DE distinguish it from regular Ubuntu. Useful apps pre-installed too.
@jpgaubier @digital_carver @ubuntustudio I have. Unfortunately awesome #FOSS apps like #darktable do not yet provide feature parity with #Adobe #Lightroom. I need #InDesign and #Photoshop for clients, so a #Windows11 VM is still required.
I've started using #MuseScore for my own engraving and it is close to meeting #Finale but I still need Finale for industry compatibility. I'm moving toward replacing #Premiere with #DaVinciStudio, though.
Sadly lots of industry standard apps require #Windows.
@DanielMReck @digital_carver @ubuntustudio Yes, I know what you mean. I think this will change not only because Linux is getting better as a platform but also because many standard apps especially Adobe ones are getting stale, AI capabilities notwithstanding.
@digital_carver Yea, I jumped ship when #Windows10 update said I had to do a clean install but #Windows11 is a buggy, data-harvesting, #privacy invading mess.
#Linux #Mint is pretty smooth but definitely has rough edges that take some #tech knowhow to resolve. Challenging to use when you have to run #Microsoft #Teams without #Chrome, SMB shares, #Adobe CC, and #MakeMusic products for work. I do okay but others in my office wouldn't want to put in the effort.
We're soooo close. Let's go!
