Data brokers constantly track & collect our personal info. They know more about us than our closest friends.

But we can do something about it. 🐦CFPB wants to understand the impact these data traffickers have on our daily lives. That's why we're launching stopdatabrokers.org

"Yet Congress is debating, for a third time, the EARN IT Act (S. 1207)—a bill that would threaten encryption, and instead seek to impose universal scanning of our messages, photos, and files." act.eff.org/action/the-earn-it

Reactionaries profit off the myth that sexual abuse is a mysterious phenomenon that can only be addressed after it occurs. But the research is clear: abuse has known causes, and it can be prevented before a child is harmed. That's what the prevention community is fighting for.

The American public has spoken several times, and the message is clear: no mass surveillance and other violations under the guise of "child protection". It's time for congress to stop reintroducting the and pass legislation that actually keeps kids safe.

URGENT: We've just heard that
Senators Blumenthal and Blackburn plan to reintroduce the controversial Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) tomorrow.

They will say that they've engaged with LGBTQ groups (true) and addressed all concerns with the bill (NOT TRUE!!!)

Here's what's up: (crossposting this thread from the birdsite)

Today, so many people used EFF's Action Center to tell Congress not to pass the EARN IT Act and the STOP CSAM Act that it briefly took the system offline. It's back up, and you can take action here:

Protecting children should be more important than getting rid of things you personally find gross

New research supports what we've said all along: that banning sex dolls could be doing more harm than good, as they could be a harm reduction outlet. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108

"Exodus Cry, an “anti-trafficking” organization inspired by Evangelical Christian and socially conservative beliefs, continues to work against consensual sexual speech and maintains an overtly anti-pornography position through the use of debunked theories" ynot.com/adult-platforms-chang

"The premise of the bill assumes that companies aren’t reporting the child sex abuse material (CSAM) they find, but there’s little to no evidence to support that claim, and the law already requires them to report it. The problem seems to be that law enforcement isn’t doing much with that information." techdirt.com/2023/04/18/earn-i @mmasnick

"According to the US Department of Justice, adolescents who commit sex offenses account for up to one-third of all sex crimes. In some states, children as young as 8 years old of been placed on sex offender registries." azrsol.org/did-you-know-your-c

We fight every day to eliminate abusive images from the internet, but we can't do it alone. Be a part of an internet that is safe for all. If you encounter illegal images or videos online, take the time to report them correctly.

The newest tactic to silence young people? Restricting the Internet.

Utah has passed legislation severely limiting teenagers’ access to social media and giving parents full control of their accounts. Several other states are trying to follow suit.

We stand in solidarity with the trans community and are outraged that Twitter is stripping protections from this vulnerable group of people. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20
