Here's a few of the prep tasks we've done for the UK General Election in/around our team:
- Add extra CDN/peering capacity
- Ensure personal & machine credentials & TLS cert work & won't expire
- Raise service quotas for safety
- Check that deployment pipeline are clean/deployable
- Ask 3rd parties to be extra-vigilant on change requests
- Rehearse failovers to backup systems
- Make sure all logging/metrics are working correctly
Probably mainly/all pretty obvious but maybe useful.

Just came back from a few pints looking all windswept and sweaty and flushed with horn and realised that... damn. *I’d* certainly fuck me. It’s no wonder you lot all want to as well.

@MastodonEngineering you may as well tell us the full details of the issue now, as the bad guys have surely reversed the patch and found it

We just released security patches for versions 4.1, 4.2, and nightly. If you are using nightly, you can upgrade to nightly.2024-07-05-security. Please upgrade as soon as possible!

Our latest engineering deep dive is up now, digging into the webcam module we developed using Omnivision’s new 9.2MP image sensor:

It's always a national holiday somewhere, people.

If you installed something complex like masto from a one-click container or other deployment system, and can't take the time the patch it on the holiday: seriously, turn it off until you can update. Your instance will catch up when you turn it back on after patching. It will be okay. #sysadmin

Masto is a beast of a server suite. It requires TLC. This crap is not as easy or carefree as they try to tell you.

@fedops @nixCraft Not sure what you're getting at.

1. The famous tech once branded "New Technology" was Windows NT. (Although it really stood for N-Ten, originally.) NT has been a vast success, and as someone who remembers Windows before it -- and OS/2 -- I can tell you it's *WAY* better than what it replaced.

2. More generically, you seem not to get my point. The world that doesn't run on NT runs on Linux, to a rounding error. The problem there is that it's *not* new: it's 1970s tech in a 1970s language, and it's done nothing to aid the vast problems caused by flaky code.

So, in specific and in general: no, I disagree.

Wow, thank you Spotify for getting back to me about my app nearly two months later. My motivation to actually correct the issues you found is... roughly 0.0.

At this point, I'm convinced that David Tennant could bring down the UK's Prime Minister with just six words

The North Sea’s biggest oil and gas infrastructure company is risking fires and environmental disasters by failing to plug and decommission old wells. Sometimes it is many years late.

@matthiasott seems to be working as designed. Except the difference is they're usually ripping off the people who can't afford a legal battle. Apple on the other hand...

@stevenfeldman Damning Financial Times report on #what3words.

They did pass £1mn revenue and lured in £6.9m from retail investors, but:

"1) Its product is flawed; 2) It isn't making any money"
