I'm doing a talk that involves a Microsoft Exchange hacking demo, but since it's a sponsored event I'm probably going to get asked to change the background on my demo server :(

I just saw the first 'Alien' movie described as, "A movie where nobody listens to the smart woman, and then they all die except for the smart woman and her cat."

And I'm like, "Yeah, that's basically it. Isn't it?"

The movie also passes all three of the Bechdel tests.

But even in a broader context, I think a lot about how to capture things like "the reason this code is this way is because when we wrote it platform didn't have support for X, it now does but in a very different way and adapting to that requires some non-trivial effort"

Which requires both knowledge of the past, the present and some speculation about how important such details will be in the future.

Hi everyone, during upgrade preparations in the staging environment, we inadvertently killed our production system. It is an issue we encountered in the past and noted down how to work around it, but human error ...

We're restoring service as soon as possible. No data is lost, just a performance issue that needs fixing.

See you soon.

@neil it doesn't seem to be less performant as more things are added to it, so they can knock themselves out and get the government contracts

Fucking BANGER of an opener in @pluralistic 's latest newsletter:

The Secret IRS Files revealed the fact that many of America's oligarchs pay no tax at all. Some of them even get subsidies intended for poor families, like Jeff Bezos, whose tax affairs are so scammy that he was able to claim to be among the working poor and receive a federal Child Tax Credit, a $4,000 gift from the American public to one of the richest men who ever lived

Took about an hour, most of which the disk resizing and here is my M1 Air dual booting Fedora with KDE Plasma 6.

Installation process is easy these days *if you read what’s on screen* and can type three letters in a Terminal. There’s no GUI install at this point but once you’re there it looks like a snappy Linux machine on ARM .

Ukrainian drones just struck Russia’s largest explosive manufacturing plant.

The plant, located 900 kilometers inside Russia, produces artillery shells and explosives dropped by aircraft.

This attack is one of several long-range drone attacks targeting sites deep into Russia.

🆕 blog! “You can use text-wrap: balance; on icons”

A fun little CSS experiment! There's a new(ish) feature in CSS which allows you to set the way text is wrapped. Ordinarily, a long line of text might be split at an inopportune time. For example: This very long headline ends with a single word Having a dangling word doesn't always look great. Using text-wrap:balance […]

@neil sort it, then take to next year. Hypothetically. Not my plan *at all*

@andypiper I've been considering doing this very thing. Instagram also, my only Meta account 🤢

The ActivityPub talks and chat at @oggcamp have motivated to properly embrace the Fediverse.

A dedicated server has been acquired and initial research on what stack I'll use to self host my own platform from ActivityPub blog comments to, photo rolls, live streams and video hosting 👍

Hopefully this will make for a talk at #oggcamp next year 🙂

I'm headed to London next week. I've never been there. Anyone know of interesting used record stores there? I'm mostly interested in jazz, classical, folk, the odd field recording (the sort of stuff I post here)

@vinylrecords

When I mention that the Commodore Amiga has a multi-planar animation system built into the KickStart ROM, I am not exaggerating! As a professional game developer, you wind up reinventing all of this stuff anyway, so why not just use this?

What other contemporary system even had something remotely close to this?

Do any of the Amiga designers want to comment on this? (RJ Mical, Dale Luck, etc?)

We were on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours this week - Fiona spoke about the growth of repair cafes in the UK, our new reports released this week and they even paid a visit to Huddersfield Repair Cafe where we hear repairs in action!🪛🌱

I received the Gerber files for the PCB of the #MIDI #interface for the #Commodore #Amiga, from a person nicknamed Buttersoft. It's a nice design, employing SMD components that fits inside a standard DB25 shell. They authorized me to publish the files on my webpage, so here they are: davbucci.chez-alice.fr/index.p #retrocomputing #music I like to see that people seem to appreciate my design, based on a few transistors and passive components.
