Starship Troopers celebrated its 27th anniversary on November 7. So it's a great opportunity to take a look back at a small part of his creation!

HOW COOL IS THIS? 🤩
Women in #Bolivia are #KNITTING tiny #occluders ('top hats' to block a hole in the #heart) of ELASTIC METAL, which are then folded up in a catheter, inserted into the body, travel ON THEIR OWN to the heart, then 'pop open' to their proper shape, b/c they 'remember' what shape they are supposed to be.

Three weeks after Voyager 1 autonomously flipped over to using the S-band transmitter for communicating with earth because of a power overload condition, it appears that it is back to communicating using X-band.
No word from NASA, but presumably the team managed to turn off the heater that caused the power surge and re-enable the X-band transmitter.
Phew 😓

Taken! I made someone happy!!!
I still have my first computer, an Osborne Executive with all of its original software and manuals. It still worked great when I last booted it up in 1999. We're really trying to not hang on to stuff forever, so it's heading for the electronics recycling in a week unless someone wants it. Free, but I don't think I can deal with shipping it anywhere, so pick-up in Woburn, MA.
(Computer details at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_Executive)
(Any ideas, @knizer?)
@neil @stepleton @aaisp Same here. Provided you have SPF, DKIM, DMARC and rDNS set up correctly, and adequately secure against spammers relaying, it will work fine.
@mcc
It's DNS, isn't it? It's always DNS.
DNS is the butler of IT.
There's a new article with more details on when the new inactivity reboot is triggered on iOS 18:

This is a cheap & great mitigation! While most people won't have their phone forensically analyzed, many more will have their devices stolen. It protects user data in both cases.
I've written a short story told from the perspective of an autonomous car.
I'd love your feedback on it.

It takes twenty human seconds to delete a folder from a USB key on a Windows machine now and I honestly can't make myself believe that the same people who cannot make a file browser work right will taking us all to AI Hypergod Productivity Heaven.
I'm honestly ready to start buying into something like Roko's Basilisk that includes the idea of basic functionality working right.
@SwiftOnSecurity '...this is the first time I've seen it.'
Well, not really. It's obvious you weren't watching the interviewee on camera, or you would have asked why they are typing.
All the engineers and analysts I've interviewed are on camera or in-person.
The number of first-round interviewees who are pinch-hitting for a friend or for money is non-zero.
If they show up for another interview, or actually walk in for the job, I do look at the contemporaneous screen shot and notes from my interview.
#WritersCoffeeClub 8. Where do you get your books?
I read ebooks exclusively because of my poor eyesight. I've been doing this since roughly 2008, although I began reading ebooks in the late 90s.
I have a Kindle account although I'm weaning myself off it in favour of Kobo and smaller independent ebook stores. ("Do not give money to billionaire oligarchs like Jeff Bezos" seems like a sound principle, especially as Amazon is enshittifying their ebook experience rapidly these days.)
Israeli supporters were in Amsterdam after their club played Ajax. They chanted things like "we'll fuck the Arabs" and "fuck you Palestine", and tore down Palestinian flags. A group of pro-Palestine people then beat the shit out of them. Every politician in The Netherlands and the wider world calls it "anti-Semitic violence".
That's basically the story. Seems like regular football violence to me. It happens almost every weekend.
