For a piece about wearing a mask as an act of community care, I'm looking to talk to people in the UK (especially Scotland) who are still masking regularly!
If this is you, and you're up for answering some questions for me, please drop me an email me at quinn@quinnrhodes.co.uk.

🆕 blog! “Improving PixelMelt's Kindle Web Deobfuscator”
A few days ago, someone called PixelMelt published a way for Amazon's customers to download their purchased books without DRM. Well… sort of.
In their post "How I Reversed Amazon's Kindle Web Obfuscation Because Their App Sucked" they describe the process of spoofing a web browser, downloading a b…

@whitequark Reminded me of @windytan s excellent infographic that explains a modem sound. https://www.windytan.com/2012/11/the-sound-of-dialup-pictured.html?m=1
Reminder – Microsoft deliberately chose to ignore the vociferous warning of their head of #cybersecurity which is why #solarWinds could happen https://www.propublica.org/article/microsoft-solarwinds-golden-saml-data-breach-russian-hackers I missed my train stop (on the way to give a talk! had to take a taxi back!) reading that scoop. Why does no one talk about it? Why do people trust Microsoft for cybersecurity? 2/2
I don't run a TV listings website anymore but - for fans of #StarTrek - ITV1 is starting showing _Strange New Worlds_ with the first two episodes from 22:20 tonight (hopefully then available on #ITVX).
It's proper old school episodic Star Trek set before Kirk took over the Enterprise (but most of y'all will know that already)
Remember the massive blackout in Spain last year? When some people had no electricity for about 24h?
Back then, the blame was immediately put on renewables, pushing the claim that wind and solar are unreliable.
Well, the answers are in, and that was a big, fat lie by media beholden to the fossil fuel industry:

Unfortunately, too many people believe this crap. The opposite is true: renewables paired with batteries stabilize the net.

I am a happy man.
When I come down from nerd heaven I'll make an extensive thread about it, with plenty of pictures and loads of alt text for those who cannot see them. I want to share this joy with everybody.
Looking for an infrastructure person who hands-on experience of servers and networking, monitoring.

Making the jump to #linux as a non-techie
Well, it finally happened, I installed Linux on an unused laptop that still has pretty good specs and is not too old.
How did it happen? I needed a new laptop. I ordered a new Windows machine from a brand I have liked and has proved reliable for many years.
But then, I set it up and looked at all the bloatware and 💩 I'd have to remove manually, and something in me snapped. I reset it to factory settings and shipped it back. 1/ infinity
@Geri I've heard mention before that a mile of new railway in Britain is several times more expensive than a mile in France, due to our Byzantine planning process. We rail against this, and want the government to cut through "red tape", until someone puts a bulldozer to a local beauty spot, then we get upset. Or so goes the tale. My interpretation is that developers always want to hamstring you. The only way out is to plan and build with direct labour.
@falken Of course, we also have a release blog: https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-hub25-autumn/
