I used to use Macs, and then I looked at iOS 7 and Gatekeeper and thought "eventually, Apple will force something horrific onto my computer, and I won't be able to say no". So then I used Windows until I looked at Win11 and Copilot and thought "eventually MS will force something horrific on my computer, and I won't be able to say no". So now the mac users are miserable with Liquid Glass and the Windows users are miserable with Recall, and am I happy? No. I am using Linux. But I chose my miseries

If you were wondering, this was roughly the point at which I realised that almost all military ranks were an attempt to find 271 different ways of saying “head”.
I'm in a #github internal group for high-profile FOSS projects (due to @leaflet having a few kilo-stars), and the second most-wanted feature is "plz allow us to disable copilot reviews", with the most-wanted feature being "plz allow us to block issues/PRs made with copilot".
Meanwhile, there's a grand total of zero requests for "plz put copilot in more stuff".
This should be significative of the attitude of veteran coders towards #LLM creep.

To no-one's real surprise Labour has lost the Caerphilly by-election to Plaid Cymru... Plaid took the seat with a 47% share of the vote, but Reform managed to gain (pretty much from a standing start) 36%, while Labour saw a majority drop to 11% (all, on a slight larger turnout of 50%).
Its not good news for Labour, but most disappointingly the Greens vote share dropped from a previous constituency high of around 15% in 2021 to almost (but not quite) zero.

@Nickiquote If you really describe driving a car for what it is, it's objectively insane that we've normalized it.
"One right of passage in America is taking the 20 minute test that allows you to pilot a 2-ton steel missile at speeds faster than are natural possible surrounded by other people piloting other missiles, many of which are moving in the opposite direction, who may or may not have passed that same test on top of a hard surface slightly wider than the missiles themselves"
Security conference talks fall into two categories
* we designed a distributed entropy siphon to perform a black-box hypervisor side channel escape and chain-load a persistent rootkit into the CPU cache
* we looked behind the sofa and found an entire industry of products/services that have made no attempt at security at all and are therefore vulnerable to the most basic issues that we've been finding in everything for the past 30 years, and no-one else had bothered to look.

Manchester Pride has apparently gone into liquidation, although the relevant documents aren't showing as Companies House yet. Five directors left Manchester Pride Limited in quick succession over the last couple of weeks - including one who was only appointed in August.
Accounts filed in 2023 said that they expected to 'make a surplus in 2024 and 2025' and 'maintain a positive cash balance throughout' - presumably that turned out to be incorrect.

For the sake of future reference: when they floated their "shopping assistant bot" idea it was a clear signal OpenAI knew they were dead, out of ideas, and a last-ditch pivot to generated porn was on the way. Maybe there's some other digital market where notional demand for enormous quantity outstrips the need for anything you'd call quality, but... where is that market? Who?
This ends with OpenAI getting sold for pennies to lowbrow goonslop pornographers before the e-waste recyclers move in.
