Long read. Excellent post, centred on the notion that it's important *to know how things work*.
"Confused, dependent users are more profitable than competent, autonomous ones. Lock-in is more valuable than interoperability. Opacity is more valuable than transparency. The architecture of modern consumer technology has been optimized against user competence with extraordinary success, and every quarterly earnings report validates the approach."

So, for my juniors, when I tell you "typing is not the bottleneck", I know what I'm fucking talking about.
It took me a couple of weeks to re-create 4 months worth of work. If I had to bet, I'd bet my second edition was *better* than the edition I lost.
So we come down to the day, and I am ready.
The age-verification trap: verifying user’s ages undermines everyone’s data protection

"Microsoft said it receives around 20 requests for BitLocker keys a year and will provide them to governments in response to valid court orders"
This should not have been technically possible in the first place... But that's Microsoft, you know...
Because Trump is insane.
The stone age didn't end because of a shortage of stone but because something better came along.

So just realised that with #Marchintosh approaching it will be almost a year since I started my aim of journalling on the eMate for a year. The idea came to me during March, but my first journal post was a month later. So I guess it's not really a #MARCHintosh project. Hell it's not even a Macintosh :-) but I will improve the workflow next month. I have enjoyed doing this and I will continue for more than a year (2nd entry was better as I’d worked on the keyboard!). https://www.scotgate.org/2025/10/08/journalling-on-the-emate/
We've been on X/Twitter for many years, but it's time to reduce our activity there and instead promote Mastodon as our main social media channel now. So we've done just that: https://x.com/LibreOffice/status/2026204949760131158 – Welcome to all our new followers here 😊
@cwebber What's telling, I think, is that all these people go on about how much they're doing and how great AI is to help them build more *but there's no actual demonstrable stuff being done.* I mean, if AI was some kind of Nx multiplier you'd think we'd be getting N times more actual functionality out of software but mostly it seems like the N multiplier only applies to blog posts about how AI multiplies their programming.
Snot time!
UPDATE: thanks for all the good recs and sharing! i think i got a lot to forward :D

"How a Planned Disney World Vacation Turned Into Four Months in Immigration Detention"
"Maria Antonia had learned English at her private school in Medellin. She overheard one immigration officer tell another that if she had been 10 years old, they would have been able to keep her separated from her mom. That, she said, is when the real fear set in."

Consultation on a new legal framework for law enforcement use of biometrics, facial recognition and similar technologies (accessible) - GOV.UK
The UK government is launching a consultation to help develop a new legal framework for the use of facial recognition and similar technologies by law enforcement. While these technologies have already proven valuable in tackling serious crime and enhancing public safety, their use raises important questions about privacy, oversight, and public trust.

Goldman Sachs has launched an S&P ex-AI index, SPXXAI, which that lets you invest in the S&P 500 benchmark index minus all things AI.
This product is proof of the demand among investors for a way to hedge their exposure to the AI trade.
