Amazon are killing off their old Kindles - notably the ones which still let you remove DRM from their ebooks.
I suspect that it is also because they can't connect to modern TLS servers.
A shame, although I was only using it for stripping DRM.
There are a few jailbreaks but the hardware and software is ancient, so I might have to repurpose mine as yet another semi-passive display.

@Innerknowing you choosing to do whatever you want with your body is entirely your decision.

The second you start encouraging other people, vulnerable people, to reject evidence based treatments it is no longer "you do you." You are pushing people to put themselves at risk of a quicker, more painful death without informing them of the realities of what you are saying; i.e. you are lying to them and they cannot give informed consent.

That should be a crime.

@blogdiva

Heavens' sake. No matter who's shoving it in my face, I don't have the time or desire to read what's basically glorified ad copy, especially a smelly turd that's been polished after being shat out by whatever bullshit engine they want to use.

Don't care who posts it, don't care who's behind it, bullshit is bullshit and I have better things to do than layer it on bread and wolf it down.

@scottjenson @carnage4life "we'd *like* journalists to be here right? They aren't coming with examples like this!" if they're only coming to see number go up engagement metrics... they may have a hard time. maybe they should come here to, oh i don't know, spread information? have targeted discussions with specific folks (rather than hoping for drive-by engagement)?

@scottjenson @carnage4life threads and bluesky are single monolithic platforms. masto federated. so would likely depend on which masto server someone's posting on i'd guess as a starter...

also, purely anecdotally/for my own part, there's less of a culture of boosting/liking/trying to make things go viral for the algorithm. lack of apparent engagement may not signal lack of people actually reading posts/following links/etc.

remember that Musk lawsuit over the price of Twitter because he claimed it was based on fake users?

THAT WAS SMOKE & MIRRORS

it was deflecting attention from what was really going on: how the platform was being used to manufacture “sentiment” frenzies for Tesla stocks.

Twitter started as a microblogging site in the 00s, that pivoted to stalkerware in the 10s and now, in the 20s, is used as the very visible hand of the market that techbros get to control.

@_thegeoff Reminds me of Collins' suggestion that Armstrong should step on the moon, exclaim "What the hell is this thing" and cut the mic. So you're in good company

Notice how quickly all that bullshit about "liberating the Iranian people" disappeared and now it's all bomb them into the stone age, poison their air and water, destroy their schools and universities, and steal their oil.

Filip Fila and Nuno Pineiro are bringing the classic #Oxygen #theme back to Plasma

Tastefully colourful icons, shadows, transparencies and shiny buttons are all part of the spectacular reimagined themes Air and Oxygen being painstakingly reconstructed from scratch by the designers.

Filip includes download links in his blog post so you too can trial-run both themes now:

Of course he's committing war crimes. He's been committing domestic crimes over and over again and facing no consequences. Why should he balk at committing war crimes?

Adobe secretly modifies your hosts file for the stupidest reason

If you're using Windows or macOS and have Adobe Creative Cloud installed, you may want to take a peek at your hosts file. It turns out Adobe adds a bunch of entries into the hosts file, for a very stupid reason.

I found that in my hosts file the other day too, and I investigated to find why they're doing

Again tho - we can't beat Iran, it's so fucking obvious that we can't beat Iran. We also didn't conquer Afghanistan, and if you look at Iraq today and say "man the US regime change operation was a success" I think you're either high or an absolute monster. Russian can't overpower Ukraine. Israel is choking on Lebanon as we speak; I know the image you're getting in the West is of a war Netanyahu is winning but he's not - they're murdering civilians, and getting merc'd by fighters. It's over.

Getting rather frustrated that the latest Android strips location EXIF from the web file picker.

Doesn't seem to be any workaround that'll let you pick a photo and have a web browser see the geolocation.

Like, I get the privacy issues, but it is rather frustrating for location-based web apps.

(Before reply-guying, please test if the code you found on a 4 year old StackOverflow post actually works on modern Android, thanks.)

This morning's science-experiment-gone-wrong

Had some hard boiled eggs which were not boiled long enough (dyed for Easter).

Decided I did not like soft boiled eggs

Cracked the egg, and put it in the microwave for a minute

Looked fine. Took it back to the table, started to peel it... moments later, EGG EXPLOSION EVERYWHERE. EGG ACROSS KITCHEN.EGG IN HAIR. EGG ON FACE. EGG ON WALL. EGG ON CEILING.

(that is all)

My therapist said I need to find things to keep me busy, so I created the @cdnspace Artemis II dashboard.

I reverse-engineered the Unity Engine powering the NASA AROW visualization and found an absolute treasure trove of data to display.

Little did I expect that it's now being seen by anywhere from 200 to 600 people at any given time with 130,000 people having looked at it in the last 24 hours. People are even building projects around my API.

Yesterday, I received a message on LinkedIn from someone working in Mission Control in Houston... and they're using my dashboard! He even sent me a photo, but I can't share it until after the crew has splashed down.

Mind blown, and an absolute pick-me-up. The best part? It's being served from my basement.

A large international study coordinated by the #EBU and led by the #BBC found that AI assistants misrepresent news content 45% of the time across different languages and platforms, with #Gemini performing the worst.

[…] Key findings:

• 45% of all AI answers had at least one significant issue.
• 31% of responses showed serious sourcing problems – missing, misleading, or incorrect attributions.
• 20% contained major accuracy issues, including hallucinated details and outdated information.
• Gemini performed worst with significant issues in 76% of responses, more than double the other assistants, largely due to its poor sourcing performance.
• Comparison between the BBC’s results earlier this year and this study show some improvements but still high levels of errors.
