my wife randomly found a cable in the bedroom, and I ran off with it to stick on the tester. Guess what? It's a USB-C charge only cable!

We must stay ever vigilant, the threat never ends.

@RabBrucesSpider1 i’m afraid I consider it a flash-in-the pan gimmick. The scope for errors is almost unlimited, especially for somebody whose native language is not English, or is dyslexic, or simply not particularly literate.

We already have grid references, and they work.

I struggle with the notion that tech companies do not understand consent.

IMHO, they do understand consent.

They understand that seeking consent - freely-given, specific, informed consent - won't get them where they want to be.

To my mind, that's not a misunderstanding of consent, but a determination to avoid consent.

That's typically why one sees language of "choice" and "control" and "transparency" to describe an opt-out regime.

They're not confused. It's by design.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨

ORG has submitted complaints in the UK and France about LiveRamp, an online advertising and data broking company.

An investigation commissioned by ORG shows the new #adtech system undermines #privacy through invasive profiling.

Thousands of #advertising companies draw detailed profiles of Internet users’ online activities to target them with ads. It's the backbone of #surveillancecapitalism and it's proven to be harmful.

So we're taking action ⬇️

@mjg59 So this would be a programming language without documentation, with a closed source compiler?

I think it's open source, but I wouldn't want to be a package maintainer for it.

Has anyone from Apple here actually commented on the PWA disaster?

At one point as a teenager I did arrange a physical swap of “hacking” software on floppy disks in a series of posts on a BBS using coded language. We rollerbladed to a laser tag arena and traded the disks inside. Everything I have done since then has been determinedly less cool, so I understand the yearning for the prelapsarian past, even if I recognize the impulse as problematic and reactionary. But we did lose something.

The EU is asking developers about the impact of Apple's decision to disable PWAs in the EU, which could be a precursor towards an in-depth probe (Javier Espinoza/Financial Times)

Domain-Driven Design: building a product out of guilt because you’ve had the domain for 10 years and the annual renewal reminder just came around again.

Considering that LLMs started off devolving within hours into Nazi rhetoric so vile they had to be taken offline, I can't say that I see this sort of overcorrection as the most horrible thing that could have happened. Also, a reminder that LLM aren't in fact intelligent, artificially or otherwise. They output what they're programmed to.

pcmag.com/news/google-explains

Garbage in. Garbage out.

And what makes this even more terrifying is that when you look at a webpage, it's often hard to tell if it's been generated with sparkling autocarrot, or written by a human. If we can't tell, then what hope does the LLM? And so we're gonna end up with the next generation models being fed on the output of the previous. This is going to create feedback loops. Reinforcing the worst the model has to offer. Strengthening the hate. The prejudice.

Cumbrian Sunset

I took this on my way home from the lakes at Hartside. The UK had Saharan dust blown up on southerly winds so for a week we had epic red sunsets.

Normally I don't do sunsets but right place, right time.

… As the plan declares, #Israel will maintain military control indefinitely of “all of the territory west of the Jordan” river. It intends to seize territory inside the #Gaza Strip to establish a so-called “security space” along its entire border. The Israeli military has already carried out large-scale demolition of homes and civilian infrastructure in northern Gaza in preparation for creating such a buffer zone.
